J.J. Abrams on the Role of the Klingons and Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness

Features

By GustavoLeao / 19:46, 19 February 2013 / Star Trek: Nemesis

A few new additions from the Star Trek mythos will be appearing in the this summer's Star Trek Into Darkness. Both the Klingons and Doctor Carol Marcus will debut in the film and director J.J. Abrams spoke with MTV about their roles.

Though a scene was shot for 2009's Star Trek featuring the Klingons that didn't make the final cut, they're making a comeback in a big way in this film.

"Their role in this is definitely that of adversary," Abrams teased, "and you'll see how that plays out."

It's been expected by many that Alice Eve's character Carol Marcus will play a love interest to Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, but (while it may happen) Abrams confirms that the film won't slow down to squeeze in a love story.

"(Kirk) meets her fairly early on and again she plays a science officer, she's someone who is a part of the adventure.  I think Chris is right, because it's very much an action adventure movie and once that gets going it's a very difficult thing to park the story. So it's very difficult to do a romantic interlude. Her role is important, she wouldn't be in the movie otherwise."

I'm going to bet that they will not be masked, but will have ridges.

And I think it will be mentioned by fans, but ultimately, he didn't make the mess.

Blame that one on Ron Moore and Rick Berman.

Not sure how I'd deal with it in his situation, but I would seriously consider going with the ridge-less look as a nod to the original series and the fact that in canon, it IS an issue.

You just have to shake your head that going against GR's original explanation created a mess that wasn't needed--all for the sake of a joke that wasn't all that funny anyway.

GR simply said that the Klingons always had ridges, but the realities of 1960s TV budgets made showing them that way impossible.

What made that work before Trials and Tribbleations were the TNG episode that showed Kahless, and the DS9 episodes that showed the Klingons that appeared in the TOS episodes, with ridges.

Enterprise did their best to deal with the issue, but I feel that ultimately, it didn't work because of Kahless.

Will Abrams show both types of Klingons? An option. Will Abrams just basically blow off canon and use the ridges only with no dialogue?

Maybe to probably.

This may be one of the only examples of a canon violation that I couldn't possibly be annoyed with because it's just not Abrams' fault. He's not trying to change the science of Star Trek to suit his purposes like in the last movie.
