Allegiance in Exile

Written by David R. George III

Review by Jeff Ayers

When I heard that one of my favorite Star Trek authors was coming out with another original series novel, I was thrilled.  The premise starts off well with the crew of the Enterprise investigating a planet devoid of life, and finding a city in ruins. When they try to determine how long ago the civilization disappeared, they discover it was less than a year ago. Cue the spooky music.

At that point the story begins to fall apart, and it makes me wonder if George had a nifty idea for a short story and then tried to expand it to novel length. He gets the main characters spot on, but the minor characters don’t ring true. A conflict between Sulu and Kirk seems forced and not believable. Several references to previous episodes of the original TV series in both the live action and animated realms seem unnecessary, since these books tend to be read by fans.

A rare misfire.

(spoilers)

Kirk waxing melancholy to the point where he's lost in being bummed about the last year of the mission in the middle of a crisis. Ridiculously out of character.

Sulu's romance was so clichéd there was a "perfect day at the park."

Interspersed with that, filler about the politics of Kirk's captaincy that are pretty uninteresting. And the main plot is not all that compelling to start with.

The only thing that moved me at all was what happened to Sulu's love interest.

Worst book in a while. I've read better fanfic and I dare say I've written it, too.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. ” — Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Message from the President of the United States Transmitting Recommendations Relative to the Strengthening and Enforcement of Anti-trust Laws.”
