The Digital Bits Confirms Original Series Movies Blu-Rays Coming in April 30th Are the Same as Before, No Director's Cut or Special Editions

The Digital Bits posted the following note today in their The Two Cents column :

All right, just a very quick early update this morning to follow up on that Star Trek movie Blu-ray post from yesterday.  We’ve checked in with our sources – both officially and unofficially – and have confirmed that the classic Star Trek feature film Blu-rays that Paramount is reissuing on 4/30 are in fact the very same discs they’ve released previously.  These are just single-film editions of the same discs that were released in the 2009 box set.  None are new transfers and all are just the theatrical cuts only.  We know – Bones is grumpy about it too.  We had a feeling the press site was incorrect and that its indications that The Motion Picture was the Director’s Cut were too good to be true.  We’d hoped that the studio might take the opportunity afforded by the May theatrical release of Star Trek Into Darkness to re-issue the classic Trek films on Blu-ray with better HD transfers and maybe include the existing director’s cuts at some point, but that’s clearly not happening yet.  We’ll let you know if anything changes.

The official report can be found at The Digital Bits.

PS - This is too bad considering TrekWeb various efforts in convicing Mr. William Shatner and the people at CBS/PARAMOUNT on doing a remastered and recut version of the 1989 movie Star Trek V The Final Frontier.

We know how Paramount loves to double/triple/quadruple dip us fans. In a few years new blu's will come out with your directors cut of ST5 (if Shatner is still alive). That will make 4 dvd versions of ST5 when instead there should have only been at least.

It's a shame CBS doesn't have the rights to the movies as well as the TV shows. Judging by their work on "The Next Generation", we could probably have something really special if they were allowed to do them.

Which is not to say that the current Blu-Rays of the movies are terrible or anything like that. Lord knows I've enjoyed them on several occasions since purchasing them back in 2009. There's just very obvious room for improvement (fresh remasters WITHOUT the sometimes excessive DNR, recreating the "Director's Edition" on the movies that applies to, some more in depth retrospective documentaries, etc).

Got to love that studios think the fans are so dumb that they will buy the same movie over and over.
