Like the other J.J. Abrams film, this film will be an artistic disaster. I don't know that this creative team can make a "Star Trek" film that works even as the look at an alternate timeline that ultimately serves the main timeline (a la "Yesterday's Enterprise", "Year of Hell", "Mirror, Mirror", "All Good Things...", "Endgame", etc.).
This film will probably make tons of money because the popcorn-eating public likes escapist cinema. But something has definitely been perhaps irreparably lost in the "Star Trek" franchise. "Generations" was bad. "First Contact" wasn't much better. "Insurrection" was lame. "Nemesis" was derivative. "Voyager" sucked. "Enterprise" made "Voyager" look like Shakespeare. And then the last film made all that came before it look like "Citizen Kane".
So yeah... with each new element that is presented, I feel like this trend is going to continue and after read the synopsis of the plot (F-them, I'm keeping my money; I don't need to watch this crap!) the last film will look like high art compared to this shlock.

These characters, while played by different actors, are still very well known and have been a part of our culture for nearly 50 years.
While I'm not saying that they should do a STIV plot, the point is that they were successful without that singular nutty villain.
I have no doubt whatsoever that they can do something like that. Your TNG conspiracy example could work.
City on the Edge, when you strip it down, was a sci-fi love story. A love story done right can work in any setting. See Titanic.
I believe there are so many ways Trek can be successful with the right writers. Intelligent scripts made Star Trek. They can work on the big screen too. Don't confuse intelligent with boring though.
That's not the point. The point is that you don't need the big evil mustache twirling villain every single time to be successful.
I do think you need a level of action, but that can be done in many ways.
And yes, I do think a story like City on the Edge would work, assuming you could maintain the quality over 2 hours.
If a story is good, it's good, and it will pack people in.
Everyone seems to be thinking that Harriman is Khan or at least one of Khan's lieutenants, but something got me thinking...
He says that he's "better at everything", but there are other species who can make this claim -- Vulcans are one of them. Vengeance? A Vulcan could be angered that Starfleet didn't send more help when one of the founding members of the Federation was in danger. Could Harriman, in fact, be a Vulcan?
Then there is the line "Is there anything you would not do for your family?" as Spock puts his hand to the brig glass over Harriman's. Odd that Spock would make this sort of affectionate gesture to one of Khan's men.
My crazy and probably stupid theory?
Harriman is Sybok.

I don't think the thing is whether or not one is a long time fan, new fan, TOS hardcore, whatever. All the moving parts have potential. Cast is fine. Visuals are fine.
I just think yet another vengeful, super powerful adversary is less than creative and, at fist blush, seems to shortchange any of the things one usually associates with the TOS vibe: moral choices, character drama, exploration, seemingly idealistc missions, etc.
To be fair, ST2, ST3, Generations and First Contact, despite being exciting to watch, also went for jugular in terms of action and didn't have any deep moral choices or ideas either.
I think this film will be better in all ways than the last, but the choices just seem very, very obvious.
I was with a large group of people last night watching the Super Bowl. Everyone in the place thought it was the best advert of the entire night and not a one of them to my surprise disliked it.
Everyone of them thought it looked exciting and said they would give it a go. So looks like I may not be the only trekker in my group of Alpha Males now.
It is a really really strange. Like I am in the twilight zone or something.

I don't give a hoot about people saying they don't like the design of the ship b;ah, blah, blah... It's not my Dads Star Trek, blah, blah, blah...
All I know is I have just seen the latest ad and gone WOW, there is that much shit going down, and now the Enterprise is in free fall - great effects - love it!!!
And to clarify - I am a 44 year old guy who used to watch Trek on the box with the olds back in the 70's when I was closer to the ground, enjoyed Nex Gen and even Voyager.
I loved the movies but thought the last couple of Next Gen were crap and was pleased to hear of the reboot.
The new Trek is more than fine by me and ST09 is now one of my all time fav movies.
And you know the best part of the redo, I can now enjoy a fresh take on ST with my kids.
Well done JJ and team, and I really look forward to the movie!!

it is actually the Enterprise crashing in Sao Francisco bay ? Is the 1701 destroyed or just damaged like the Enterprise-E in Nemesis ? Questions, questions.....

but I just don't like the design of this ship. Nothing beats the 1701 refit and 1701-A. Those were just beautiful to look at. This looks like a weird hot rod.
Why is this important? Because it takes me out of the moment. I don't feel emotionally invested in the scene when I see my beloved Enterprise burning up in the atmosphere. It just doesn't carry the same weight. Oh well.
