Also, can't imagine that Paramount are thrilled at the idea.
All very odd.
I love watching the crazy chatter this kind of news incites.
"Finally...Trek can go back to the irrelevant, profitless franchise it was becoming now that the profit-hungry, lens-flare obsessed Abrams is going back to his first love...Star Wars"
People are so weird. If all they want is something stuck in the 60's, they can go make/support the silly little fan films that virtually nobody watches, dress up as Captain Kirk in your basement and sit in your satisfaction that "pure" Trek is finally back and tucked away neatly in the nerd-closet where its safe and where nobody else would want to watch it. Because God forbid Trek be watchable and relevant to more people. In a way...if Abrams and Bad Robot et-al leave the franchise, I hope it sinks completely and the purity snobs finally get the Trek they've always wanted - the one that's in their own minds that doesn't really exist.
Clearly Disney made the guy an offer he couldn't refuse in the last two months. Though the chances of him directing the next Star Trek film have been lessened (though still possible), I can still easily see him being executive producer of the next film. This would, at the very least, ensure the look and feel stay the same. But let's face it guys... most sequels and trilogies have different directors taking the helm at some point.

SONO FELICE. This is the end of the Abrams in STAR TREK.He prefers star wars and BAD ROBOT-PARAMOUNT CONTRACT ENDS IN 2O15...SO,STITD IS THE LAST TREK MOVIE, I mean,no more new time line movies... NEXT TREK TV SERIES IN ORIGINAL TIME LINE. Abrams era in st is dead. THE DICTATORSHIP OF THE SUPREME COURT IS OVER and their minions are CONFUSED.
TRUE TREKERS, TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO LIvE.THE END OF THE DARKEST HOUR IN ST.
HA, prophetic title, ST INTO THE DARKNESS,HAHA.
Sono tanto contento...
... though it could end up being true. Part of me hopes it is true so that we could get a fresh director for the third ST movie. Not that I disapprove of what JJ has done - quite the opposite - it would just be interesting to see another director's vision of Trek.
Anyway, we will see.

whose posts were more offensive than porn.
He posted one too many,
got kicked out on his fanny,
and all the while he had been warned.
This will be worth it just to piss off the haters.
I hope he still directs Star Trek 3 though - and that it comes out in 2016.

I'll wait till the news is reported by media a bit more established than The Wrap, but if they go with Abrams I don't see a problem. Other than the spectre of lens flares on the Millennium Falcon.
I do hope that if he takes on Star Wars, that he does have the sense to pass Trek on to someone else, at least in terms of directing. As he has Star Wars - maybe - on his plate, along with reports he's also doing a Lance Armstrong movie, plus knowing him he probably has a half dozen TV series in the pipe along with overseeing Revolution, if we want to see Star Trek 13 released before 2020, they'd better put someone else at the helm of the next one.
Luke Prime goes back in time to warn Luke Skywalker (Chris Pine) and his rascally, trigger happy friend Han Solo (Zachary Quinto) about the hidden truth of Luke's father.
10 cents says JJ loves 3D now too.

The central question that emerges . . . is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not prevail numerically? The sobering answer is Yes – the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. -- the eminent conservative rag, National Review
I know I've been rather vocal about defending Abrams when people attack him over his comments and interviews, but hasn't he spent the last month or two giving various reasons why he won't direct it?
I smell negotiating tactics...
That and as stated below, they probably couldn't get anyone else to do it.

I don't think anyone will think he can do both, but I'm ok with him leaving Trek, so long as he leaves Orci and Kurtzman behind on the third Trek film. I think they're key.
But this is a big mistake, in my opinion.

First he says he won't direct Ep7 because he wants to be a simple moviegoer.
Then he says he won't direct Ep7 out of loyalty to Star Trek.
And now he's directing the movie. Why? I very much suspect, because no one else wants to. Abrams isn't a bad choice as long as he isn't involved in the screenplay.
I think the whole director finding process was a farce.

I love Abrams' work as a producer/director (what I've seen, anyway). But there really isn't ANYONE else they could sign to take on "Star Wars"? They're seriously going with the same guy who's done the last two "Trek" movies (counting "Into Darkness")?
Hell, let's just have him reboot "Stargate", "Battlestar Galactica", "Buck Rogers", "Flash Gordon", "Starship Troopers", "Farscape", and "Babylon 5" too, while we're at it.
