William Shatner Says Original Series Has More Soul and Personal Stories Than J.J.Abrams Star Trek Movies

Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:25, 8 January 2013 / Star Trek: Nemesis

CNN osted a new video interview with actor/director William Shatner
and here is an excerpt.

"J.J. Abrams is a great filmmaker. The way he has brought a major audience into the franchise is to make a ride, so Star Trek becomes one of those rides with explosions and the wonderful people they have got playing those roles. He has made Star Trek popular once again with a far larger audience so he seems to be doing the right thing. The Star Treks we were in told a more personal story. Told a story that had more soul to it…but the large screen encourages explosions and shoot-em-ups."

The video interview can be found at CNN

You can't compare 67 hours of television to 2 hours of film.

--------

“I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!’” - Gene Roddenberry.

“I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest, as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations.” - Gene Roddenberry.

Wow, as much as I disagree with his arrogant self 99% of the time, I think this is how I will talk about the new films from now on. I think even the TOS films had more soul, but Shatner is trying to be decent, saying that the current films take advantage of the medium.

Now, all I want to see is Spock singing "Try a Little Tenderness" on the bridge to really get some soul into Trek.

If you actually watch the video, instead of responding to the summary, I think you will find his actual comment to be spot on.

I'm a long time fan of "the Shat" , but he is way off base here. The movie was great and managed to combine soul and action.
You can only do so much in a movie format, and the movie managed to convey the essence of all the characters effectively.
I hate to say it, but "the Shat" is wrong!

A rehash of a rehash.. | Report this post to moderator

This is probably the third or fourth time we have seen this exact line published on this website. Shatner (like a few people on here and other sites) seem to consistently forget that comparing a television series from 45 years ago, to a pair of summer blockbuster feature films of today isn't fair. Both a series and films have to achieve totally different things, and to be quite honest? The only way Star Trek will ever return to television is if the films make a lot of money and generate a ton of new fans to the franchise. In that regard, J.J. is doing exactly what Paramount hired him to do.

"If a sixth Star Trek television series is ever realized, it will be set in the new universe." -- cdydatzigs, June 15, 2009.
