Personally, I thought DS9 was a little on the stiff and boring side the first couple of years, but they certainly worked out the kinks, and by the time the series was finished you could argue it was one of the best science fiction shows to air, ever.
What a show that was.

In January of 1999 (at the age of 20), myself and two friends got a personal invitation to visit the set of the show from B.C. Cameron, who was an assistant director. It was during the Dominion War arc, so lord knows what the name of the episode was. All I know is it was directed by Rene Auberjonois and was the sixth-to-last of the entire series. It aired in April. From seeing all the sets in person, sitting in Quarks bar as a scene was shot, seeing the Breen for the first time in rehearsals and a personal tour of the backlot by its vice president? I will never forget that amazing day. :)

"If a sixth Star Trek television series is ever realized, it will be set in the new universe." -- cdydatzigs, June 15, 2009.
Wow, this show brings me back to the 90s. I loved the show, but what I most remember is being able to discuss details of DS9 with Ron Moore on the "Ask Ron Moore" boards back then. I was a frequent contributer there and greatly enjoyed it. Ron really taught me a lot about TV and movie making.
I can't believe it's been 20 years. Wow.
Man. Hard to believe it's been that long.
As seemed to be the case for a lot of fans at the time, I couldn't stand the show when it first began. However, over time, as the show came into focus, and brought in things like Worf and the Defiant and began building towards the war against The Dominion, it eventually grew to become my favorite of the various spinoffs (though I am finding a renewed love for TNG watching it on Blu-Ray). While it may not have had the strongest ratings, it really does serve as a great example of why, as much as I may love the 2009 movie and am looking forward to "Into Darkness", we need another TV series at some point.

Here's a piece I wrote today, in honor of DS9's 20th anniversary--it's still my favorite of the various Trek series:

TOS and TNG get all the attention. But DS9 was the best.
