UPDATE: Critically Ill Star Trek Fan Shown Rough Cut of Star Trek Into Darkness, Wife Makes Statement

Features

By GustavoLeao / 10:03, 31 December 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

On Sunday, the critically ill Star Trek fan, named Daniel, who was having difficulty even seeing the nine minute IMAX preview of "Star Trek Into Darkness", was shown a rough cut of the entire film. Neither Paramount, Bad Robot, nor J. J. Abrams have acknowledged the private showing, but Daniel's wife has sent out the following statement:

"Hi everyone, it's Daniel's wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture ...However, Daniel 'hates' being an 'inspiring cancer story' we his friends and loved ones would prefer for the update to have more of a heartfelt message of giving, especially during this season. This is a story of us giving something to him, the 'internet' community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. The story of us (and of course JJ Abrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind (and a person like me who knows slightly less about these things). Also, it was truly amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to sow this to us. It is also so wonderful for his friends & his family to finally hear some good news from us. They know how important film is to Daniel & could not think of a better way to please to him. So this gesture really has brought a lot of smiles all around. It is a wonderful thing to see with Daniel and a wonderful thing to see Daniel enjoy - Making someone as ill as he smile for any length of time really makes a difference. (At this point making me smile is good too). This is also so poignant as JJ Abrams took so much care in the first Star Trek movie to at least TRY to get everything 'right' for the fans and we were so touched when he was concerned that we wouldn't 100% enjoy the screening as it's still being worked on ......... Be assured we enjoyed it 110%! We are so grateful thank you, thank you, thank you ......."

Daniel, along with his family and friends, continue to be in our thoughts, and Trekweb sends thanks to J. J. Abrams, Bad Robot and Paramount for providing a private screening for Daniel.

Their gracious efforts make one proud to be a Star Trek fan. A link to the original report at Trekmovie can be found at

Class act, JJ.

I lost my dad in 2012 and I know he would have loved INTO DARKNESS. Dad was a big TOS fan. He loved Star Trek.

I miss him.

I hope in this new year and years to come, that someone would be this kind to any of us. When your told you have two months to live and your wish is to see a movie that will be out 3 months after you have already gone. to be able to see tommorow even though you know you wont be there to experience it. it gives you hope that your life will be there five months from now, even though it wont. We are human beings we only have so much time on this earth, is it reasonable enough to be happy and to be happy for someone who wont be there. in five months no matter what we are doing when star trek comes out, know that someone else wont be there.

Rules of acquisition | Report this post to moderator

This is a piece of hateful marketing. They have taken advantage of this fan with terminal cancer for their business, for making money. A free tv spot for Bad Robot. Yeah, right now is true: ST into the Darkness: Moral and ethic darkness. Bad Robot is hard capitalism.

In a fan with terminal cancer, they have seen an opportuny for making a tv spot. And at Christmas time. What a lachrymose coincidence! A Ferengy would applaud it. Rules of acquisition
9-Opportunity more insticts equal profit
10-Greed is eternal
22-A wise man can smell profit in the air
48-The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife
299-Whenever you exploit someone. It never hurts thanks them. It is easier to exploit them next time

This is not true charity , because true charity no search for publicity. True Charity is mute and anomymus.

Lame, Abrams, Lame. Lame..
I'm used to be a proud trekker. Rigth now I can't. Gold is all in Abransverse.

Happy New Year to my fellow TrekWebbers!

This was a great gesture. Abrams really did not need any extra publicity. It was just a classy move.

Let's get perspective...it was good of him | Report this post to moderator

I am the first to detract from JJ's aesthetics and business approach, but this was a good thing to do. Period.

My guess is there was a lot of work involved in getting the rough cut ready and I'm sure that though it undoubtedly is going to benefit him in the PR department, the kindness done for a grieving family is the most important part of this gesture.

I know there are some people on here that will call this a "pub grab" by an "opportunistic" Abrams, but it should be noted that he's done this before. A dying college professor who was famous for a speech he gave that was recorded on YouTube I believe, had terminal cancer was granted a speaking role in the last film. He was the communications officer that Uhura relieves because of her expertise with Romulan dialects. He passed away before he could see the finished film. You know, maybe J.J. is just a good guy. Just sayin'
