J.J. Abrams Says He Won't Direct Star Wars Episode VII Because of His Loyalty to the Star Trek Franchise

By GustavoLeao / 07:26, 26 December 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams will not be at the helm of the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII.

Speaking to Empire magazine special Into Darkness issue, Abrams said he will be sticking to the "Star Trek" franchise. "I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead! I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands."

He added that "there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Is that a new pic from the new movie? I don't think it's from the last one.

It looks like Kirk is near a jet engine or something.

people would quit calling episode IV Star Wars, It's A New Hope. Been that way for 30 years now. And J. J. should know that.

...Is he nuts? A few weeks ago he said that he won't direct Star Wars, as it seems, out of respect for Star Wars. Because it is too much of a burdon and he want to stay a moviegoer. Star Trek he can direct because he never was a fan of it.

JJA in November 2012:
Quote:
"Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time," he told HollywoodLife.com this weekend, "I frankly feel that - I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big 'Star Trek' fan growing up, so for me, working on 'Star Trek' didn't have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then [sic] anyone to the next iterations of 'Star Wars,' but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"
