Total Film posted a detailed description of the 9-minute special preview footage of Star Trek Into Darkness, premiering with IMAX screening of The Hobbit, Here's the description :

The prologue opens on Noel Clarkes character, who wakes up in a future London, before heading to a stately hospital with his wife. There they look over their very sickly daughter.

When Clarke steps out to get some fresh air on a balcony, we hear Cumberbatchs authoritative delivery of an offer that Clarke presumably cant refuse, saying that he can save the child.

In a moment thats sure to have all the Khan conspiracy theorists banging their fists in frustration, Clarke asks, Who are you?, and the camera trains in on Cumberbatchs face (overwhelmingly enormous on the IMAX screen), before it cuts to the next scene without an answer.

Trek fans should be pretty happy with what they see next, though. Were on that planet, overgrown with scarlet flora, glimpsed in the first trailer. Its Nibiru apparently, a Class M Planet.

Two cloaked figures sprint across the forest, before tearing their hoods off to reveal that theyre Kirk (Chris Pine) and Bones (Karl Urban). Hot on their heels are the natives, wearing similar robes but identifiable by their cracked white skin.

It seems that Starfleet are on a mission to deactivate a volcano thats set to level the planet, although its inhabitants dont seem to appreciate the gesture.

The Enterprise is revealed to be loitering nearby, underwater.

Meanwhile, Spocks being lowered into the volcano to activate the device thatll defuse the eruption, but the safety cord snaps, leaving the half-Vulcan stranded amid the lava.

Being logical, he doesnt want the team to risk the mission by saving him. And so the preview ends, with a brief sizzle reel showing off some of the trailers highlights.

Face It: They've killed Trek | Report this post to moderator

Many people here jumped all over me and a few others after we bashed the first Abrams effort. I said it was Trek for the ADD generation. People were so happy to see Trek relevant again, that they were willing to overlook what a pile of garbage it was. I wonder how many real fans are enthused by what we've just seen. I'm not at all disappointed, really, because the writing was on the wall with the last film: this team of brats has seriously damaged the integrity of the franchise. yes, they;ll make a decent bundle by using this as a holdover for the next transformers/x-men/gi-joe movie, but as Trek, it is going to be the second consecutive zero.

SPOILERS
Lots of Kahn hints: "Needs of the many" speech, hands on glass. I did think that I saw glowing eyes though...

Mickey from Doctor who is in the movie.

The "natives" scene is better than the description. An actual effort is being made to adhere to the prime directive. Spock is ready to die for it. I'm 99% sure that it isn't Enterprise that crashes. Enterprise is underwater but as part of the mission on the red planet.

Overall a cool 9 minutes that got a big applause at the end.

BTW, the high frame rate version of the Hobbit was odd. I'm glad I saw it and I can see why Jackson likes it but -- I don't know, maybe I'm just too old. It is an impressie movie and Jackson clearly understands the material.

I love the 2009 movie.... | Report this post to moderator

...but something tells me I will not enjoy INTO DARKNESS. I hope I am wrong. But this movie seems too dark to my tastes, has little to do in common with TOS, with issues like terrorism, mass destruction, starships falling from the sky and so forth. I guess the new timeline has become too pessimistic to me, after reading about this movie and the STAR TREK ONGOING comic books. But TrekWeb will continue to support the movie and report every bit of news till September, when I retire as editor of the site. I hope my replacmente loves the New Timeline more than I did. I like the cast, I like J.J. Abrams as a diretor, I only think that writers Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof dont know what they are doing.

Cest la vie.

Gustavo

Nibiru is also known as Planet X among conspiracy theorists.

If not for the age difference, this would make me wonder if that was a clue the villain was Charlie Evans, a.k.a. Charlie X.

Running from the natives? | Report this post to moderator

What is this a Tarzan movie? Haven't we all become culturally aware enough to realize no one should be "running from natives" in a movie any more?

....The Prime Directive is a bit more malleable these days.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. ” — Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Message from the President of the United States Transmitting Recommendations Relative to the Strengthening and Enforcement of Anti-trust Laws.”
