Roberto Orci Says the J.J. Abrams Star Trek Movies Will Probably Be Only a Trilogy, Alex Kurtzman Talks Kirk and Spock Friendship

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:55, 12 December 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Wired posted a new interview with Star Trek Into Darkness writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, and here are few excerpts of the article.

The Star Trek producers sound like they’re in synch with director Chris Nolan’s approach to the Batman trilogy: quit after three. Orci told Wired, “I think in our minds, we always thought that we’d probably start outliving our usefulness after three movies. That’s a nice three- act structure for whatever story you’re telling.”

Orci said there were reasons for casting a lesser known actor like Cumberbatch as the heavy. “I liked that some people are not aware of him yet, I think they’re going to be after this movie. It’s always nice to see someone whose work you weren’t familiar with too long before and then suddenly: oh my God he’s so good on Sherlock, and you’re now a fan of that show. So to have Benedict agree to come on and join sort of a preexisting family…and his voice is terrifying. Benedict’s voice is like its very own special effect.”

Kurtzman, added that John Harrison won’t be the only source of friction . Spock and Kirk will also continue to bump heads. “We want to obviously pick up where the last movie left off, but not assume that Kirk and Spock are best friends at that point because they’re not. That was a big part of our challenge: to make sure we came in at the right point where they are still learning how to function as a family.”

Three Movies. Zero Content. | Report this post to moderator

A trilogy is a trilogy when there's a story. Not when there's just a business plan. This bears so little resemblance to anything Treklike...it's preposterous.

Comic Book Non-Canon Story? | Report this post to moderator

Based on Orci's comments, I may look at this trilogy as nothing more than a popcorn series with no ties to what we all call Star Trek. Really, if 3 movies is all they want to do, then there's nothing keeping me from thinking this new timeline is just a side project to keep us entertained. I want ST on TV again. Period.

The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy - one story over three films.

Star Trek under Abrams may only extend to three movies, but that doesn't make it a trilogy. Star Trek 09 had no loose ends to tie up.

It would be interesting to see where the franchise would go post-Abrams then.

Would they recast again? One great thing about the original cast is that the characters didn't have to be in their 30s.

Would a post-Abrams Trek incorporate the Trek canon that Abrams established?

Would a new head honcho respect that, or go for a complete reboot that has absolutely nothing to do with either Trek timeline?
