MAJOR RUMOR : Zachary Quinto May Not Return as Mr. Spock After Star Trek Into Darkness ?

Features

By GustavoLeao / 09:53, 18 November 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

In the November 23rd issue of "Entertainment Weekly", Zachary Quinto speaks of his recent roles as serial killers, along with his part as Spock in the newly rebooted "Star Trek" movie series directed by J.J. Abrams.

While being interviewed about his reveal last week as the villain, "Bloody Face", in the television series, "American Horror Story: Asylum", Quinto says that he is "ready to 'go in a different direction' after 'Star Trek Into Darkness' hits theaters this summer".

Quinto states that he was "hesitant" to take on the role of the psycho villain in "American Horror Story: Asylum" due to the fact that he had already played a crazed killer (Sylar in " Heroes"), but he "was drawn to the fact that he's ('Bloody Face') not a superpowered serial killer who's telekinetically slicing people's heads open". Quinto offered, though, that "it's safe to say this will be the last serial killer I'll be playing for the foreseeable future".

Concerning his previous statement of wanting to change directions, Quinto ended by saying,"It's like an era of association with certain roles - a part like Spock, or a part like Sylar - is coming to an end."

Does Quinto's statement that his "association" with Spock is "ending" mean that he is weary of the character and may not return to the Trek movies after "Star Trek Into Darkness" is released, preferring a new, greater challenge?

I would be disappointed to see Quinto leave the role, but ultimately, that role will always be Nimoy's, even if Nimoy never plays it again. Recasting Quinto is no big deal. They already did the hard part.

That said, I do like Quinto as Spock. In fact, when they announced they were recasting, and Heroes was doing its run, I was one of the first people to post that Quinto should get the role. I was shocked when it actually happened months later, and his performance was fine.

He's not irreplaceable, but I'd like to see him stick with it.

He tweeted about an hour ago that that story is just a rumor.

Although, he did not deny it, he just said it was a rumor.

Look, he's fine as Spock, but hardly he barely passes as a pale imitation of the real thing. I'd be thrilled if another better trained actor picked up the role. Or, this is a PR setup for a Spock "death." the guy snt an idiot.

Don't judge by Nimoy standards | Report this post to moderator

Just because someone signs on to a role for a couple of movies doesn't mean they commit to keep playing the role for the 40 years. Even Nimoy told Paramount to go to hell in for the 1977 "Phase II" series. If Quinto wants to go in another direction, nothing's stopping him. Same goes for Pine and all the others. We've been spoiled by Shatner and his cohorts playing the same roles for decades - in the case of Doohan and Kelley, literally for the remainder of their careers. We can't assume automatically that the same rule applies to other actors.

He would be foolish not to return | Report this post to moderator

He has an automatic paycheck every 2-3 years with a high profile movie franchise. Spend the remaining time doing the little art projects or whatever he wants to do that challenges his creativity, or whatever.
