Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #7

Reviewed by Patrick Hayes

The covers: Cover A has the TARDIS in the middle of the action at Wolf 359. The Doctor is way over his head! Sweet image by J.K. Woodward. The RI Cover is by Jenny Frison with Riker, Picard, Amy, and the Doctor standing solemnly before the TARDIS. The men look fine, but Pond is a little off. Overall grades: A A and RI B

The story: The Doctor and the Williams have travelled in time via the TARDIS to sneak aboard Locutus's Borg cube to copy the Borg executive routines for use on the Enterprise in the future, I mean the present--Wait! I mean the...time is so wibbly wobbly. The trio's outing on the Borg ship is similar to the first time our Starfleet heroes went aboard. Once back a plan is made and I was so pleased to see writers Scott & David Tipton have the characters stay so true themselves; the bottom of Page 14 being the strongest example of this. Lots of action in this issue, which should please those who've thought the last issue was overly chatty. There's also a good amount of humor, my favorite being the top of Page 19. Great action, great lines, and the tension continues to increase in a great story. Overall grade: A

The art: If you thought last issue looked good, this issue is even better. There are some flat-out gorgeous portrait work going on in this book (Page 2, panel five; Page 4, panel one; Page 8, panel three; Page 11, panel five; Page 13, panel three; Page 15, panel two; and Page 21, panel three). Woof! With pencils by Gordon Purcell and painted art by J.K. Woodward, this is great stuff! I really liked how Woodward was able to keep the interior of the Borg ship dreary grey and green, but out heroes appropriately bright. There are also two nicely done action scenes with the two strongest members of the Enterprise. All in all, nicely done! Overall grade: A-

The letters: Plenty of dialogue and plenty of great sound effects, since there is so much action from Tom B. Long. I've wanted to see some of the classic sound effects from both series appear in this story, and I wasn't disappointed. From the many "STOMP"s to the wailing "INTRUDER ALERT", I was one happy camper! Overall grade: A+

The final line: Each issue is improving on the previous. All that's missing is an image of the TARDIS disappearing into the vortex of time to end the issue until next month! Overall grade: A
