J. J. Abrams, the Director of Star Trek Into Darkness, Will Be Offered A Chance To Direct the New Star Wars Episode VII Movie

By GustavoLeao / 03:32, 9 November 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

J. J. Abrams, the director/producer of "Star Trek Into Darkness", will be one of the directors offered a chance to direct the next "Star Wars" movie.

Vulture.com states that a "40 to 50 page treatment" for "Star Wars Episode VII", has been completed by Michael Arndt, who wrote "Toy Story 3" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire". The treatment is being sent to the top Hollywood directors such as Steven Spielberg and Brad Bird, including J. J. Abrams. Disney, the owner of the "Star Wars" franchise, wants to "make sure they have tried the biggest names" before selecting a director.

Abrams, who is in charge of the "Star Trek" franchise, has previously stated that is first love was "Star Wars" ---as a youngster, he was not a big fan of "Star Trek". It will be interesting to see if Abrams is tempted to direct the new "Star Wars" film, and what, if any, effect such would have on the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise.

The original report is here.

I'm a bit concerned. Back when he was in charge of both Alias and Lost, Alias ended up suffering. I can't see how he could balance both massive franchises. If he does Star Wars I wonder if that means the "showrunning" of the Trek movies might pass to someone else. A lot depends on his contract with Paramount - he might have to pick one.

I really would rather Brad Bird direct the next Star Wars. I trust him to bring back the wonder and awe from the first two Star Wars movies back into the franchise. I'm not sure Abrams and his crew could do that.
