Airline Thriller to be Produced on a Shoestring

Dallas-Based Filmmakers redefining “Low Budget Indie”

DALLAS, November 7, 2012 — Robert Zemeckis’ box office hit Flight was produced for $31 million—a relatively low figure by Hollywood standards. Now take that figure, divide it by a thousand, and you’ve arrived at the budget for Chariot, a single-location, independent thriller in production from Dallas area filmmakers Brad Osborne and Eric Vale.

“Making an airplane movie for less than $50,000 seems crazy to most people when they don’t understand our approach,” said director Brad Osborne. “But we’ve found ways to gather resources and approach the project creatively which allows us to deliver a Hollywood caliber feature for very little money.”

Shot aboard a non-working 727 parked on the backlot of AMS Pictures’ studios in Dallas, the film stars Anthony Montgomery (Star Trek: Enterprise) as one of seven strangers who wake aboard a plane in flight, with no idea how they got there or where they are going. “It’s an apocalyptic thriller, which happens to be set aboard a jetliner,” said writer/producer Eric Vale. “The story is claustrophobic, because, for 90 minutes, you never leave the airplane.”

The filmmakers were granted the use of the plane by Andy Streitfeld, CEO of AMS Pictures (and Osborne’s employer). Also available to them at little or no cost are lights, camera and gear. Since Osborne edits and composes, postproduction and music are also covered. The bulk of the budget is going toward paying and feeding the cast and crew for the lean, ten-day shoot.

“What has given birth to this project—and what will carry it through—is the incredible amount of excitement and enthusiasm it has generated,” said Osborne. “We produced a teaser trailer with friends for less than $200, and it has helped us raise funds and support for the film.”
