Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #5
Review by Patrick Hayes
The covers: The Doctor and Captain Picard look
frightened as they peer out the TARDIS's door. A nice mash-up of both
characters by J.K. Woodward. The RI Cover is by the Sharp Brothers and
it showcases the women of both series. Front and center of the Trek
delta shield is Amy Pond, to her right is Troi, to her left Crusher. In
the upper left corner is the Enterprise, while in the bottom right is the TARDIS. Very cool! Overall grades: Both A
The story: This is my favorite "chapter" so far in this
series. There is no conflict between the opposing sides; there is only
the inner conflict of Jean Luc Picard. Last issue the Borg asked for
assitance with the Cybermen and were unequivocally declined by Picard.
This issue begins with the Doctor and Guinan trying to convince Jean Luc
to work with them. A three pages summary of "The Best of Both Worlds"
follows to explain the Captain's position. I'm always impressed when
either show can be absolutely riviting when the characters are just
talking. It's a solid sign of superior writing, which is no suprise
since this issue is written by Scott & David Tipton. The story
really begins hitting a series of home run on Page 13. The discussion
that continues through Page 15 is great. And the final way Jean Luc is
convinced is pure Who magic. This is perfection! Overall grade: A+
The art: A bit hit and miss, again, from artist J.K.
Woodward. The images of Guinan are fantastic on every page, and Amy Pond
is equally well done. But the Doctor and the Captain, who as the leads
should be rock solid, hit a few speed bumps: Page 1, panel one, and Page
9, panel four. The flashback sequence is very effective as are final
four pages. They look great! There's enough to like. Overall grade: B
The letters: The story doesn't really require many
sound effects, so there are only two, but there is a lot--a lot--of
dialogue rendered by Shawn Lee. Overall grade: A
The final line: Worth reading if you're a fan of either series, and if you're a fan of both, you'll be happy. Overall grade: A-
