J.J. Abrams Says He Had Massive Budget Issues on His Star Trek Movies

The Los Angeles Times posted a new interview with Star Trek XII director J,J, Abrams and here are excerpts.

"It is preposterous and embarrassing that movies cost what they do." says Abrams who is directing the $185 million Trek sequel.

"Certainly on 'Star Trek' and the sequel and on 'Mission: Impossible' three and four, we had massive budget issues always," he said. "Yet we always get it figured out before production starts and realize that the money you don't get forces you to rethink something and challenges you to figure it out in a new way."

Say what you will about the Star Wars prequels, but they were made in the modern era and cost a little over $100 million to make. Maybe that has to do with the fact that George Lucas can do things in house, but there is no denying that they are visually impressive movies.

Mission Impossible I get- the stories (and Tom Cruise) demand that they are shot on location in far exotic locales. I just don't understand why a Star Trek movie has a budget of 185 million and they have to "make do".

I'm not suggesting going back to a Nemesis budget- good lord no. But how is 185 million not enough?
