Karl Urban Reveals to SFX the Identity of the Star Trek XII Villain Played by Benedict Cumberbatch ? - SPOILERS

Features

By GustavoLeao / 12:38, 9 July 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

At a promotional junket for Dredd, Star Trek XII star Karl Urban looks to have let slip to SFX who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel. When asked what it was like having the Sherlock actor on set, Urban said (BEWARE OF SPOILERS) :

“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

While I much prefer it to be Gary Mitchell than Khan, it's still a case of them remaking an old episode (plus IDW Comics just did a remake of Where No Man a year ago). I'd still rather they come up with NEW stories rather than rehashing.

The fact IDW already did Gary Mitchell leads me to think this is misdirection.

I think Karl's screwing with us. His Trek IQ is pretty high, so he'd know to suggest Gary Mitchell. But are we really to believe they are doing a reboot of "Where No Man Has Gone Before"?

[SPOILER]

God-like powers WOULD explain how Cumberbatch is able to shake off a Vulcan nerve pinch with ease, but wasn't that already the topic of the first reboot comic? I doubt they will re-tread that territory.

I also doubt Karl missed the memo on keeping things TOP SECRET.

I would rather it be Mitchell than Khan.

I think Gary Mitchell would be a much better fit for Benedict Cumberbatch but I am certainly not convinced. At this point in time I have no clue and think they are just jerking us around. And to be quite frank, they are pissing me off a bit.

So what if the villain is named? That isn't like a big huge spoiler. If anything it would get people excited wouldn't it?

Are the comics canon for the AbramsVerse? If so I think that Karl Urban made a big fat joke since the Mitchell story has already been told there. Or will he return, like Khan did?

After the Khan rumor hit, I'd have a few of my cast members leak out some other names to keep throwing people off. Then finally before the trailer where the villain is (possibly) revealed I'd have someone say we are going to be introduced to a smuggler and mercenary.....Harry Mudd.
