Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Knows Nothing About Star Trek

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:51, 7 May 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

In a new interview with MTV News, Star Trek XII star  Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that he has made no effort to learn about the history of the Trek franchise.

"What do they look like?" Cumberbatch asked when questioned about Klingons.

Rumored to play the new Khan, when questioned about this, he went on to deny knowing what the SS Botany Bay, Khan's ship, is.

"I think it's best to, like a lot of acting you do, you have to start from a knowledge base of zero in order to have every experience that you're portraying again and again and again feel like fresh," Cumberbatch explained. "So I purposefully made no attempt to learn anything about anything."

Considering every other actor in the Abramsverse very purposefully spouted all kinds of love over TOS, in somewhat unrealistic detail, it's kind of refreshing to hear Benedict say what is probably the truth. He doesn't strike me as an ass kisser either and probably said, "I'll say what I please to the press."

He kicks all kinds of ass on Sherlock. As far as his acting, I'm enthusiastic.

Doesn't matter if the actors know anything about it | Report this post to moderator

BC is hardly the first actor to enter into Star Trek with little or no knowledge of the franchise. That's not a prerequisite (I seem to recall reading that Patrick Stewart knew little about it either). The key is that the writers and directors know about it and can guide the newcomers. Same goes for Doctor Who - the latest Doctor had hardly even seen the show before he was cast and has gone on to be one of the best actors in the role.

I'm still very disappointed they've decided to go back to the trough with BC rather than creating a new character for him.

I'm pretty sure he was just messing around with the interviewer. He was asked about Khan and the Klingons. So basically, the two big rumours that were "confirmed" recently (but not officially).
Rather than saying something he wasn't supposed to say he just claimed to know nothing.

All he has to be is a good actor. And that he is.
