Bryan Fuller Hopes that After Star Trek XII He Could Work with J.J. Abrams on a New Star Trek TV Series

EW posted a new interview with producer Bryan Fuller and here are few excerpts.

"Bryan [Singer] and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it,” Fuller says. “I don’t think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out. And I’m sure it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams’ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now.”

With the movie coming out in 2013, and the fact it'll take them at least a year or two to get a TV series in order, that'll make it 2015 before we see anything. I've been saying since 2005 that I didn't want to see a new Trek TV series for at least 10 years, and I'll stand by that. By 2015, hopefully (though I'm not holding my breath) the toxic fan atmosphere that unfairly killed Enterprise will have abated and a new generation of fans introduced by the movies will have arrived.

I'd have liked to have seen at least 4 movies before a new TV series, but assuming Trek XII doesn't suck and repeats the success of XI, then that'll have to do.

I echo those who say they don't want to see a rehash of TNG in the Abramsverse. I agree. If they want to do another Enterprise show, make it the Enterprise-H or something and set it well ahead of either the original or reboot continuity. Or create a new ship - DS9 and VOY survived quite nicely with no Enterprise, after all.

Whatever they do has to appeal to mainstream audiences. That means no Klingon-centric series, for example. People want starships and a crew (or space stations and a crew). Get the right mix of characters and some half-decent stories, and they're off to the races, as long as the audience gives them a chance. Lots of people wrote off Enterprise based upon its first episode alone (and some even before the first episode aired). By that mathematics, some people could decide to write off Fuller's series in about October of this year...

One possible spoiler in terms of timing, though is you could see Paramount commission a new Trek series sooner rather than later if Lucas ever gets his live-action Star Wars series into actual production. That would be the game-changer.

I've mentioned this before... We've got the Prime Universe and the Reboot Universe... why not set a new TV series in a brand new universe all together? Continuity won't be a problem, it won't interfere with movie continuity... We need a Star Trek TV-verse.

I don't want to see a rebooted TNG series, I would rather see a big screen version of it done the proper way.

I agree with getting away from an Enterprise-based show. I would love to see a great experiment like a Starfleet JAG office or The Department of Temporal Investigations. Something different and unique.

I think it's almost a certainty that the next series will (a) be a live action show, (b) be a ship-based show and (c) will be a ship other than the Enterprise. On top of that, Paramount is NOT going to stop cranking out money-making films just because there is a series on the air. Star Trek: First Contact was a success with TWO series on the air remember. As long as the series is well-made and fresh (a la Battlestar Galactica) and the films are of the same universe and follow suit? All will be well, don't worry.

A pure CG series would also be fun. Adult stories with an artwork like that Final Fantasy movie or Resident Evil Degeneration.

Let the movies run their course, then try another TV series. And while it pains me to say it....maybe a ship other than the Enterprise and company?
