Scott Bakula on Star Trek Enterprise Cancellation

Features

By GustavoLeao / 10:31, 13 April 2012 / Enterprise

IFPress oosted a new interview with Star Trek Enterprise star Scott Bakula and here are excerpts.

"I have to tell you, there were so many political things that happened in the time that we were on the air, with networks being bought and sold and studios changing personnel completely. I never really felt like we had failed as much as we were victims of circumstance.

"I felt like our show got better and better, and the overwhelming conversations I've had with people are like, 'Oh man, that last season was the greatest. You guys were just hitting your stride.' I said to the cast going in 'Please don't count on seven years. We're on a network with completely different rules.' We made 98 hours of television, a huge success by most standards."

That last season was exactly what the show should have been from the start. It was excellent stuff.

I agree some with what Mr. Bakula says. The changing network environment didn't help. I too felt season four was the best they had in the show.

However, as a defender of Enterprise in most respects, I can't agree 100% with his comments. I know many have taken issue with canon violations but I find it ironic that many of the same posters who did that embraced Star Trek 2009 with its complete reset. B&B were trying to do minor resets in the existing universe.

As far as characters are concerned, I liked them about as much as I did DS9 and Voyagers but not as much as TOS or TNG. Mr. Bakula is a good actor but I always felt his Captain Archer was a hot-headed teenager. Perhaps he was suppose to represent the "new kid in space" that humans were suppose to be but at times I couldn't see him being the man chosen to be Earth's first representative in space. Jolene Blalock is no Jeri Ryan but her character was interesting in the outsider/immature Vulcan role. (Remember, she stated in one episode was was only in her sixties, if I remember correctly. That makes her the equivalent of a college age human!) Trip and Phlox were the most interesting characters of the "big four". The others were secondary characters with little development just like Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura. DS9 developed its secondary character the best of any of the Trek shows. I just wish Enterprise had done the same.

I personally feel the effects were good. Most of the writing was average to good. Both are just like ALL the Trek shows some good, some great, some real stinkers.

Overall, Enterprise was a decent show that compares favorably with most of the other scifi on TV and definitely is superior to what has become of scifi on Syfy. (But that is the topic for another post.) I just wish Enterprise had had three more years to build on season four.

One disclaimer: in case some of you have forgotten, I watched the original Trek on NBC so I am biased toward that era and felt more comfortable with 22nd century. Never did buy into the TNG era of humanity of DS9's grayer version of Trek. (After nu-BSG can't call DS9 dark!)
