Brent Spiner Remembers Star Trek Nemesis and Talks Star Trek XII

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:31, 24 March 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

TrekMovie.com posted part 2 of an extensive interview with TNG star Brent Spiner and here is an excerpt.

TrekMovie: Personally, while I had some issues with Star Trek: Nemesis, that was not one of them. I thought it was his final stop on his journey to being human.

Brent Spiner: Exactly right! Exactly.

TrekMovie: But people and Paramount, look at film as a disappointment, especially financially. And if you hear Jonathan Frakes’ take on it, with him in the director’s chair things would have been different. Do you think it is that simple?

Brent Spiner: I think Jonathan would have done a great job as he is a wonderful director, but I think there is more to it. I honestly think that for that period of time, the fans had had enough of us. I say that because the movie didn’t "open" the way the other movies opened. It wasn’t about good or bad – nobody came and that was significant. It was not the quality of the film. People go to bad films all the time. Every Star Trek movie opened bigger and that spoke to how the fans were sick of us. Maybe if we waited a few more years and come back it would have been a different story. The first weekend was dismal and that wasn’t word of mouth or Data dying, that was that the fans were not interested.

TrekMovie: Well let me ask the obligatory JJ Abrams question. Did you see the 2009 Star Trek movie? And any thoughts on it or the sequel?

Brent Spiner: I saw it and found it totally entertaining. And no doubt I will see the next one. It was a nice action movie and I enjoyed it

Franchise fatigue | Report this post to moderator

I know it's a term a lot of you die-hard fans loathe, but there's a lot of truth to the "franchise fatigue" label. The franchise after 1996 was a showcase for middle-aged actors in jumpsuits, aimlessly walking around recycled corridor sets and mumbling technobabble. In an era of new Star Wars films that were infinitely cooler to younger audiences? What chance did ANY Next Generation film have in 2002? Sure, a better executed story, more appropriate casting and director could have helped a little... but if you think for a moment that general audiences gave a damn about Star Trek during that time, you're really kidding yourself. 15 years of the same formula even got tiring for fans to watch.. pure and simple.

I miss TNG and though I was "disappointed" with some aspects of Nemesis, I'd still run out to watch a new TNG movie. Maybe after a trilogy of "new trek" JJ can bring us a Nu-TNG movie with the familiar crew, shake it up a little bit and give us a mix of the nu/old universe and some new younger crew.

The script for 'Nemesis' was available online weeks before it was released -- and the consensus then among the fans was that the movie wasn't going to be very good. I saw two TV critics give 'Nemesis' ZERO stars - critics who had previously given 'First Contact' 3 of 4 stars. "Word of mouth" was really bad before 'Nemesis' was released, and those who saw the actual movie didn't change that opinion.

The "franchise fatigue" excuse by the execs and some of the cast is utter nonsense. If the movie had been as good as, say 'First Contact', it would have done much better at the box office. The competition would have hurt it, but ticket sales would still have been much better for a better movie, and I'd bet DVD sales and rentals would have been much higher too.

My opinion of 'Nemesis' is that it is the dullest of the Trek films. No life to the story at all, especially since they cut the few character moments from the film. They tried to make an action movie, and the result was one of the least exciting action movies ever.

I know the excuse of all the other franchise event films around it, but that's too convenient and i never thought that was the sole reason the film did so poorly, although it was a bonehead move for sure. But fans had lost interest. Where i think Spiner is wrong, is in the time frame. I think waiting longer wouldn't have made any difference. But fans of Trek may have checked it out in theatres after the event movies, if they hadn't heard how bad it was. The only series that was on-air to bolster fan support was the pitiful Enterprise, which as an indicator, should have shown fan apathy was at an all time high, even that early in its run. I'm sure the fact that it was a TNG movie had the studio thinking they would be able to overcome that, but it really shows how dependent the TNG films had become on the concurrently running ST TV shows. Certainly, any non-fans they hoped to pick up had zero interest. I think whoever marketed it had no idea what they were doing.

I couldn't disagree more. I wasn't "sick" of TNG, at all. I was very excited to hear that a new movie was coming out, in spite of Insurrection. I love those characters, and am disappointed that they went out that way.

That movie also came out during a very crowded weekend, so it's not fair to say people weren't interested in seeing it. What was it's competition again? Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and James Bond? If the movie was GOOD, it would have developed a strong word of mouth and sustained itself, in spite of that.

There are good parts to the movie, I guess- I do think the Data storyline is good, independent of everything else that is going on in the movie- not the B4 stuff, but the idea of him making a sacrifice, etc. I also like the deleted scenes about family, moving on, etc. There is a better movie in there somewhere.

But not a great movie. Maybe not even a good one. It's a failure on many, many levels. Direction, cinematography, story, plot, lighting, and even costumes. Oh and don't forget sound- the sound of latex whenever Shinzon moves is ridiculous.
