Thanks to Trekweb, I knew the entire plots of both Insurrection and Nemesis before going into the theater. Hell, I even knew MOST of the last movie before going in- what I didn't know, I chose to avoid.
It's just the way the world is nowadays. If you want to avoid it, then it's very possible to do so. And besides, most of the moviegoing public (who this movie is shooting for) won't know anything about it anyway.

Gun to head, picking one extreme, I would also go with the Abrams way. I agree that the days of leaking the script online sucks--but at least even with that it was possible to avoid stuff unless you ran into some prick that didn't know spoiler etiquette.
I know there are tons of TV spoilers out there and I'm pretty good at avoiding them.
I just feel that this video is beyond what I consider right.
When Nemesis got leaked, I didn't care. I was so pissed at the way the franchise was being run that I felt they deserved it. I didn't even pay to see the movie because I was that angry.
Abrams, for all the mistakes I feel he made, doesn't deserve anything like that. I still am hoping he delivers a better movie than last time.
But that's another thread.
Talking about what I want to see is one thing. Reacting to a video that spoils exactly what will happen, even out of context, is another.
I don't mind a clip or two, even now. A photo like the ones we got? No problem as long as there aren't too many.
But an unauthorized video? No thanks.
I'm not going to watch this video.
There's a line between Abrams' ridiculous level of secrecy and too LITTLE secrecy.
I get Abrams' desire to guard the storyline.
I do think he goes too far. Letting us know who is in the cast and what role they are playing does not qualify as a spoiler.
I guess you can argue that ANY piece of info is a spoiler, but that's really not the case.
I consider the line to be something you would see in the TV Guide.
So--here's an example of a nonspoiler:
Good Times--When James gets a new job, the Evans family prepares to move to Mississippi.
Here's an example of a spoiler:
Good Times--The Evans' family's plans to move to Mississippi are ruined when James gets killed.
I think a still photo like we got before is no big deal. It wasn't THAT revealing. It enables us to talk, buzz, speculate, but we still have few facts.
But a VIDEO? I think that's crossing the line. This is an UNAUTHORIZED video, which means if we watch it, it could contain a bad spoiler.
I will only watch a video that would be authorized because odds are, it will reveal something, but not enough to ruin the movie. If I catch something on say, Entertainment Tonight, that would work. A movie trailer. A commercial. No problem.
But this? I think the leak is crossing the line and since I don't need spoilers, I won't click the link.
he's going to flip that there's video.
