Star Trek Of Gods and Men to be Available at Journalist Cary Harrison Website, Director Tim Russ to Appear for a Live Q&A Online

By GustavoLeao / 08:36, 1 January 2012 / Star Trek: Nemesis

On Jan. 9 at 3 p.m., journalist and radio personality Cary Harrison is streaming Star Trek: Of Gods and Men— the independeent Stra Trek movie directed by Tim Russ and starring Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols and Alan Ruck—on his websites, GoHarrison.com and TheSmartShow.org. The film will be available for on-demand viewing through the websites’ archives.

“The movie is Tim’s creative love child,” Harrison said. “I though it should be presented to an eager global fan base, respecting the legal limitations that Paramount has placed on the distribution of such a film. As long as he’s not charging ticket prices, he can show it. That’s why I’m making it available to the audience.” Harrison said.

"It’s a very good film. True Star Trek fans will really enjoy it,” said Harrison. “This is a serious movie, not a parody. There are some light, humorous moments as is typical of all the Star Trek shows, but it’s a serious film.”

“It’s not a super high-budget film; it’s more fan based,” said Harrison. “There are special effects, but they are in line with what you saw on the TV series in the 1990s. But Star Trek stories have always really been about the characters and the situations. This film does both very well.”

Immediately prior to the streaming, director Russ will appear in a pre-taped interview on Harrison’s web show at 2 p.m. (Pacific time) on Jan. 9 to discuss the film, as well as the state of today’s world through the eyes of Star Trek. That show also simulcasts on public radio stations KPFK (90.7 FM), the Los Angeles Pacifica station, and WBAI (99.5 FM), the New York City Pacifica station.

Then at 3 p.m. (Pacific time), the movie will begin streaming online, without commercials, on the Go Harrison website and TheSmartShow.org. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Pacific time), Russ will appear for a live Q&A about the film with phone-in callers on Harrison’s other web show, Harrison’s Hangout.

Star Trek Of Gods and Men is already available for streaming and download at

the movie official website and

on YouTube.

I finally watched the whole thing on YouTube this morning. While certainly better than what some fans with a good camera and software can produce, it's still lacking, but it is an interesting way of looking at the Trek universe and while at first you might think it contradicts Mirror Mirror and In a Mirror Darkly it really isn't. The overall acting leaves something to be desired, but Tim Russ does good with what he's directing. The Trek actors not playing their normal roles do ok, and of course what Trek fanboy wouldn't be loving Chase in the green skin. FX are videogame quality but considering the budget this probably had it suffices, and it was nice to see some class ships that we never got to see in any Trek project. Too bad they couldn't have got the original actor to play the baddie part towrads the end (I won't give it away who it is, but I think many will be thinking the same thing). On a 1-10 scale, I give the overall product a 6.

I'm sure the people who make them put a lot of effort into what they're making. In the case of this one, it's cool that there's actual former "Trek" stars involved.

Still, that said, I've never held "fan films" based on a popular franchise in particularly high regard.

Frankly, I'd rather watch the worst episodes of the officially produced "Star Trek" ("And the Children Shall Lead", "Spock's Brain", "Threshold", etc.) on an endless loop than any of the fan productions out there.

If the makers of fan films really want to impress me, they'll make something original (or as close to it as anything can be, anyway), not based on an established franchise.

You have to hold fan films to a different standard than a Paramount production.

I always felt that New Voyages and Of Gods and Men worked because they just have more heart and soul than anything done by the studio in years.

I don't believe the studio gets it, and the fans do for the most part.

You're not going to get the perfectly acted film because these usually aren't the real Trek actors with real studio budgets.

It's really cool though when you do get real Trek people involved. It's a labor of love.

...I don't share Gustavo's opinion of this film, which I thought was pretty awful. Sorry, Gus! :)

As everybody here knows, I love fan films. And OF GODS AND MEN is my all-time favorite fan production. I have always being interested in Captain John Harriman and in this movie, Harriman finally got to be the hero. And of course, there is Chase Masterson as a very dangerous Orion Slave Girl. Yay !!!
