J.J. Abrams Says Star Trek XII Has the Most Amazing Script, Sets Are Almost Done, Says He is Shooting on Film and 2-D

MTV posted a new interview with Star Trek XII director J.J. Abrams and here are excerpts.

"It's a little early to be talking about 'Star Trek,' but I will say that they wrote — the three writers, Damon [Lindelof], Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] — they wrote the most amazing script, and I'm thrilled to get a chance to direct it," he said. "It's totally mine to screw up, so if you don't like it, it's completely on me. Our sets are almost done, so we're going to go back and start shooting next month."

"We're shooting on film, 2-D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good.

"We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a huge fan," he added.

My mind is at ease now about how this will be shot. The best news about the sequel so far, particularly if he goes the IMAX route. People may hate 3D conversions, but I'm not much of a 3D fan at all. Thanks JJ... good decision.

If it is shot in 2d, then it will look right when I watch it in 2d in the theater and at home. Good.

I love 3D; when its done right it really pulls you into the experience. Most commercial films have pretty mediocre 3D but if you check out some Imax features shot natively in 3D like Hubble or Space Station (either on a big Imax screen or even on a larger home TV) then you'll see what 3D is capable of.

Having said all that, I'm really disappointed to read that Abrams is shooting in 2D and then doing a post-conversion as that almost never works. I've seen most of the 3D films released so far and the only post-conversion that worked well at all was Alice in Wonderland (and even that would never be mistaken for a native 3D production).

Hopefully, Abrams will at least shoot the film with 3D in mind, choosing his camera compositions accordingly and avoiding all his gimmicks that typically wouldn't co-exist well with 3D.

Still, I'm really bummed with this. If they're going to do 3D do it right, otherwise just don't do it at all.

Can't stand 3D. It's a gimmick. Your brain perceives things in 3D anyway.

Take TRON for instance. I thought the 2D sequences were WAAAYYY better looking than the 3D ones.
