Maybe Shatner is just speaking "tongue-in-cheek" It would seem, that he does have a certain amount of knowledge of the series, since he is making documentaries about the various captain's and their series.
Shatner certainly knows the fans disdain for Trek V and I seriously doubt he thinks its the best movie of the franchise.
Shatner's ego is so big, he probably said these inflammatory statements sarcastically just so he can have all of Geekdom talk about him for a week.
I watched it again on Netflix and I do have to say I half concede about this film. It has two elements that I think I, in my desire for a film that would speak to the more serious things I drone on about( honoring modern vets, values, etc.) I didn't see these strengths:
1-fun and humor, which made it go by much more easily
2-a sense of visual drama
I had a lot better point of view on this film, getting some distance from it and watching again. This comes from a guy who needs to see a play about five times to really get it....industry geek.
Though I still kinda cringed at the plot stuff, ( and was surprised at how many shots they outright stole from Star Wars!) I can see now that they were shooting for rollicking, fun adventure that set up many visual events( space battles, blowing up planets, etc) that I just don't care about.
And, to give them some credit, they did have an amazing amount of work to do in introducing all the characters and still somehow make it fun or humorous event, rather than some laborious exercise( as a matter of fact, thinking of it, havng read "Story" by Robert McKee, I really counted these little events...geek)
All the performances were good. Zoe Saldana who was really great, actually. I think she is due for greater roles in the future.
Hopeful for the future. We'll see.
Shatner's only ever been interested in Trek when he's involved.
The Captains for him is just about keeping busy and making more money.
I gave up being interested in Trek actor's opinions years ago - they're usually only interested in their show/character too.

"I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!'" - Gene Roddenberry
"...I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest, as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations..." - Gene Roddenberry
No wonder the supporting cast had issues with Shatner... after 40+ years he doesn't know enough about the other characters, novels aside he was involved in the writing and the directing of Star Trek 5, a movie in which even Nimoy and Kelly had serious issues with how their characters behaved. After what the characters went through in Trek 3 & 4 to have half the crew follow Sybok and go against Kirk really is a kick in the teeth to the actors/characters.
Unfortunately Shatner has always been about pushing his own agenda, and as time goes on it shows more and more.
Well, that pretty much proves what I've often said: He didn't write any of his Trek novels. They're steeped in the lore, so he couldn't have. Obviously, his co-writers wrote them entirely.
