Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof Say Star Trek XII Will be No Remake, Talk Vulcan and Alternate Timeline

Features

By GustavoLeao / 16:51, 12 June 2011 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof talked for forty minutes about their 2009 Star Trek movie, and about Star Trek XII at the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival. TrekMovie.com posted  highlights, quotes and a video clip and here are few excerpts.

Lindelof: We often referred to the destruction of Vulcan as the 9/11 moment of [Star Trek 2009]. There had to be an event that was so significant that it allows you to change the Trek universe, not just for the purposes of the first movie, but moving forward. The idea of saying, if you did something that huge, what would be the effect of that rippling outwards?

Lindelof: We love Trek too, but we want to also blaze our own trail here. The idea of just kind of playing cover songs and classics again – we feel like there has to be a little of that, but there has to be a lot of original music in the set list to be worthy of your time and attention. You don’t want to see a remake, you want to see a new movie.

Lindelof: That was the only way we could make it work, because we said, we can’t be bound by the incredible canon of Trek, because the Chekov knowing Khan thing [continuity error from Star Trek II] would have just been the tip of the iceberg. It would also hamstring us in a way because if you watch the movie you would know that no one could die and nothing bad could happen to anybody, because they have to grow up and go on the adventures we saw them have. And we also didn’t want to replay those adventures, because everybody knows the outcomes.

Orci: We also didn’t want to erase what came before, so that is why we decided to sort of update time-travel. It is not the rules of Back to the Future. It is the rules of more modern theories, of creating an alternate universe. It explains why some of the characters do what they do. Spock doesn’t try to fix the timeline because there is no such thing as fixing the timeline, they are just in a new universe that is going on its own. That had been done is some of the previous Star Trek series, but not in the movies.

More from the writers and a video at TrekMovie.

(In response to StilKiroks response to my post below - still don't know why threading isn't working properly)

Dude, I was just having fun and I thought the post itself made that fairly obvious.

This is the problem with some Trekies: they are so concerned about being right with regard to their own points of view about Trek that they just can't have fun with it anymore.

...that the "Prime Universe" still exists: my DVDs still work. Everything's still there, any claims to the contrary are just a delusion.

Ridiculous | Report this post to moderator
By: OkeydokeyObi (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:51:22 on Jun 13, 2011

That's ridiculous. Just because there isn't a line saying "the prime universe is intact", that doesn't mean the prime universe went away. You are the one jumping to that conclusion. It's still there. There is no more Romulus, of course, but it's still there.

The question is, will we ever see another show set in the prime universe? Maybe, maybe not. The way I figure it is, we weren't going to get one for a LONG time, if ever, after Nemesis and the cancellation of Enterprise. So if the prime universe is your thing, then you were out of luck no matter what.

At least this way, there is some interest generated in the franchise, which creates opportunities later on to revisit the prime universe. And odds are, it will be nothing like you ever saw before anyway- it will have the continuity of the prime universe, but be set probably a generation or more after the events of Nemesis/Romulus blowing up.

Alternate-Shmalternate | Report this post to moderator

I remember right after I saw the film I complained that, among other things, they had wasted precious script and film real estate on this whole
"alternate reality" thing just to placate the nerds. Gah...who cared, I scoffed. But I guess in retrospect, considering it's still even a topic to discuss, JJ did what he felt was "right" in terms of dealing with the hard line elements of Trekdom that would require the explanation of a new cast and a new story to "make sense."

Well played, Abrams.

(In response to Terry 212 below - I don't know why it's not threading my responses correctly) Technically, Star Trek IV wasn't a "fix-the-past" type of story. It was a "fix-the-present" type of story where they had to retrieve something from the past in order to fix it. Although, technically, if we are following Abram-verse time-travel rules, three alternate universes were created in that movie. 1) the universe that no longer has Kirk and crew because they left it, 2) the universe that no longer has the humpback's and 3)a universe that should technically have two Kirk crews but which was saved by the arrival of the humpbacks, unless that Universe's Kirk & crew also left to find help and were replaced by the prime crew, which essentially creates a mirror copy of the prime verse which would be indistinguishable from the prime by an outside observer, unless the prime's crew wasn't replaced by one arriving from another alternate universe in which case the prime is now very different but we don't know what it looks like because we haven't seem it since the beginning of Star Trek IV, which would likely mean that TNG, DS9 and VOY were all set in the original prime2 universe which we have mistaken for the prime universe because we didn't understand that the temporal cold war in Ent was actually creating thousands and thousands of alternate universe's which then began to bleed into each other (which is why we had a random entire episode of the mirror universe in Ent, which wasn't really the mirror universe as we know it but was in reality the prime2 mirror universe created by the Borg's interference from the future in the prime2 universe of TNG which created a preceding prime2 mirror universe by turning Cochrane into a warlord) in which case this entire discussion is mute because we have in reality been watching dozens and dozens of alternate universes throughout the years which we only began to notice recently but assumed were continuty errors on the parts of the writers but were in fact a cleverly thought out well-crafted device to get Trek fans to argue and gripe at each other, thus utilizing one of the first rules of publicity which states that even bad publicity is good publicity and we all fell for it until Trek 2009 finally came out and Abrams inadvertently gave away the biggest secret in Trek history which in itself has created an alternate universe, one in which Braga is a genius!

Nah, I'll just go with the idea that they switched time-travel theories.

(In response to StillKirok below - somehow the threading got messed up when I replied). The 2009 movie firmly established what this interview spells out. Did you not hear Spock's whole monologue on a new series of events creating an alternate timeline? They put that in the movie to specifically tell the audience that this was a different universe now.

Why do people have a problem with this? It's an alternate universe. It totally works for me. I think it's ingenious, really. We can have our cake and eat it, too.
