And you need to listen to people's voices, because George Takei is fine. Just because you're an ageist doesn't mean that these actors can't do their own voices for their own characters. You may be prejudiced against these people, but that doesn't mean you're right.
I can't say I'm excited about this but I'm not opposed to it. I'll see if anything comes of this before I make up my mind.
I would like to see a show like Twilight zone in that it has a different crew/protaginast and location every episode. We could cover all generations, multiple locations....and maybe some of the more popular episodes could blossom into miniseries.
I've expressed my interest in something along the lines of this on more than one occasion in the past. So, once again, I'll just say I am totally in favor of this.

any animated trek needs a gimmick. I dont think that simply having everyone on the ship going on adventures will work.

The central question that emerges . . . is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not prevail numerically? The sobering answer is Yes – the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. -- the eminent conservative rag, National Review
I've wanted a TOS animated show for a couple of years now. It won't affect the box office of the movies in a negative way, and it might even attract some additional younger fans.
I think it should be set in the new universe, but should reference the original universe; some of the main characters are aware that they're in a parallel universe anyway.
An animated series could cover stuff like the Vulcans finding a new planet, and whether any Romulans survived the destruction of their world.
Let's have three movies out before there's a live action show though.

"I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!'" - Gene Roddenberry
"...I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest, as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations..." - Gene Roddenberry
I still think it's premature to do another full-out live action Trek series, after the burnout in 2005, and I wouldn't be interested in such a project anyway after expending all my patience defending Enterprise for 4 years. An animated series is a different matter. It would allow them to cover territory a live-action series couldn't, plus it would stand a better chance of survival. And there's also the potential bonus of getting TOS and even cast members from other series involved, either voicing their original characters or new ones.
I think it would work, and it would also allow the franchise to have a less-expensive presence in-between movies. Bring it on, I say. A potential bonus might be that Paramount will be forced to finally allow TAS to be canon because I can't see a Trek 2.0-based series not being canonical.

That's the thing--if such an animated series would be considered canon, you CAN do a prime universe story and follow up and do things that you might not do in a movie.
I actually do think they could do it if motivated.
If the prime universe does still exist, they have the chances to do various stories involving the prime versions of the characters, including bringing back Kirk Prime.
And I agree the Star Wars series works well.
I don't think you necessarily target a Trek animated series at kids. I think you target it as if it were an 8pm prime time show, and do stories that are good for kids and adults, like pretty much any Trek series.
I doubt they would ever do an animated series that focuses on any crew other than Kirk. It would make no sense. BUT, that wouldn't mean guest stars couldn't come from the 24th century.
Why not? It's MUCH easier to do these mega stories in animated form.
I think George Takei could certainly do Sulu. Koenig can still pull off the Chekov voice and Nichols could do Uhura. They'd also likely be the easiest to get. Would Shatner do it? Maybe. Likely no, but maybe. The best part is that while having those voices would be very cool, it's not a big deal if they don't do it.
It's all about the writing in animation.
Again, in this perfect world, Orci would do a better job than the Transformers series he's doing, which isn't bad, but I would want more from a Trek series. In a Trek animated series, I'd would love to see some of the better Trek novelists get a crack at writing episodes, especially the Reeves-Stevenses. If I were king of Star Trek, they would be put in charge of all things creative.
Those guys do good work, but if it takes 2-1/2 years to write a movie script (sequel), is it going to take 6 months to write one episode of an animated series? :)
Their Transformers series isn't that bad.
The most important thing would be to use Kirk and crew, and it seems obvious they would.
In a perfect world, they would set an animated series in the prime universe. Doing so would have several benefits, including arguably establishing the prime universe still exists. It would enable them to do things with the prime universe that they couldn't do in their movies, including fanboy type stories that involve other Trek series'.
Technically, you could get the surviving original actors to do the voices if they'd want. Cartoons don't age. Just ask Bart Simpson.
You could tell stories that aren't a part of the movie world. In the prime universe, they could be canon, without affecting anything they do in the movies.
Of course, this is not a perfect world. I would guess such a series would take place in the new universe. That said, they could STILL show the prime universe in some capacity, and they would have the option of making that series canon.
Personally, I feel TAS should be canon, and it's a shame it isn't. The mistake made there doesn't need to be repeated.
Done right, this could be way better than a live series.
