Patrick Stewart Says Being Typecast as Captain Picard was Painful

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:37, 13 April 2010 / General Star Trek

Portmounth Today posted a new interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart and here is an excerpt.

He admits his fame in Star Trek (as Jean-Luc Picard) and in X-Men gave him a higher public profile, but says it also became an albatross.

'One distinguished Hollywood director I wanted to work for said to me "Why would I want Captain Picard in my movie?" That was painful.

'I'm not saying that's all over. On the contrary, next year I hope to be active in film again. But I'm hoping in a way to go in through the back door rather than wearing the Star Trek spacesuit.'

The full interview is here.

A "distinguished" director said that? Wow- explains a LOT about the crap we are getting these days. If anyone remembers, Stewart was in "Jeffrey" right after "Generations", which is about as far away from Picard as you can get. He has a great presence and is a fine actor. Yeah, I get the whole "Patrick Stewart is spoiled and should be thankful for Star Trek" thing, but I am more interested in just how stupid "Hollywood" can be.

"But I'm hoping in a way to go in through the back door rather than wearing the Star Trek spacesuit."

Giggity.

Star Trek was a wonderful experience.... | Report this post to moderator

...in 5 4 3 2...

He continually seesaws between praising it and slamming it. To be honest, I don't care either way beyond wanting him to pick one.

Sad that someone said that to him, but I honestly have always felt the typecasting thing wasn't much of a problem for him or for any of the TNG cast. I think producers and studios have realized that they are the ones responsible for typecasting actors and not the actors themselves.
