Rod Roddenberry Wants Brent Spiner to Play the Android in The Questor Tapes

Airlock Alpha posted a new interview with producer Rod Roddenberry, in which he talks about the casting for the upcoming remake of the unsold 1974 Gene Roddenberry pilot The Questor Tapes. Here are few excerpts of the article.

"I come from the point of view of a fan, a fan of Star Trek and a fan of Gene Roddenberry." Roddenberry told Airlock Alpha during a segment appearing on Alpha Waves Radio Thursday.

"Brent Spiner did a fantastic job as Data [in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation']. The character was an android, yet there was something very human about it," Roddenberry said. "Perhaps it's my inability to be creative. Brent Spiner is who I fall back to when I think of Questor."

"I'm not suggesting that's the way we would go," Roddenberry said. "If you're asking the question who right now would I pick, it would be him because I really don't have anyone else that I am thinking of that has ever done a role like that convincingly."

Much more in the full article which can be found here.

I like Spiner and I think he's a great actor. But Data was based on Questor in the first place (check the histories of TNG and I believe you'll see Gene R. making mention of this at some point), so to have Spiner play Questor would be redundant.

If I had to pick some to play the role today, I'd say David Tennant. He has the range to be able to pull this off, and if the remake veers into action-adventure (which it will, I'm sure) Tennant can handle that sort of thing.

One aspect of the original Questor story which got Roddenberry into trouble (per his comments on the old Inside Star Trek record he did in the 70s) was the fact Questor gets involved with a girl or something (I read the novel 30 years ago and last heard Inside Star Trek about 20 years back, so I'm going on memory), which is what happened with Data and Yar in TNG, of course. I think it might be interesting to see how they approach this if they make Questor into a female robot.

The only problem with doing Questor Tapes today is they'd need to completely overhaul the story as much of what was in the original has already been surpassed, not only by the handling of Data in TNG, but also Battlestar Galactica and Caprica. Even Dick Wolf of Law & Order covered some of the same ground when he did Mann & Machine (featuring essentially a female version of Questor, as a cop) back in the 90s.

Perhaps it is some inability to be creative, but at the same time, Spiner would be a good choice, because the initial interest in this story would be from Trek fans, and Spiner would give them a tingly feeling up their collective legs. Personally, I am not that crazy about Spiner, Data wore on me by the end of the series, and especially in the movies. But I can't wait for Questor, growing up and reading and hearing about Questor, I always thought that and Genesis II sounded like great ideas.

Rod- keep it up man! You are a great ambassador for your dad and Trek. You are doing better than me, man. I would be one lazy SOB if I had your inheritance. I would be splitting my time up between the yacht, golf courses, and the playboy mansion.

But peharps he could play Questor's human friend, Dr. Jerry Robinson. It would be a nice homage to both Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry.
