Mr. Kim, who plays the time-traveling tough guy Jin on "Lost," has been the first actor cast in a coming remake of the crime drama "Hawaii Five-O," The Hollywood Reporter said. He has been cast as Chin Ho Kelly, a detective played by Kam Fong in the original series, which began in 1968. CBS/PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE RESTORED VERSION OF ALTERNATE "STAR TREK" PILOT ON BLU-RAY
An exclusive report for TrekWeb.com by Bill Williams
"Enterprise log, Captain James Kirk commanding. We are leaving a vast cloud of stars and planets which we call our galaxy. Behind us Earth, Mars, Venus, even our sun, are specks of dust. The question: what is out there in the black void beyond?
"Until now our mission has been that of space law regulation, contact with Earth colonies, and investigation of alien life. But now, a new task: a probe out into where no man has gone before." - original opening monologue from "Where No Man Has Gone Before"
As 2009 comes to a close, fans have seen STAR TREK arrive on the high-definition Blu-ray format in numerous forms. So far this year TREK fans have seen the release of the first two seasons of the original STAR TREK series, along with box set collections of the Original Series-era and NEXT GENERATION feature films. Most recently fans celebrated the release of J.J. Abrams' blockbuster STAR TREK feature film on Blu-ray and DVD. In addition, two "best of" collections of the Original Series and NEXT GENERATION episodes on DVD were released.
Now, to celebrate the upcoming release of the third and final season of STAR TREK on Blu-ray, fans will be excited to see the first-ever official release of the alternate version of the series' second pilot film, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", newly discovered and restored for Blu-ray.
"When we first discovered the original film print existed, we jumped at the chance to give STAR TREK fans the opportunity to add this never-aired pilot to their collections," said Ken Ross, executive vice-president and general manager of CBS Home Entertainment. "It will be a real treat for fans to see and hear how it all could have begun."
While similar in presentation to the final broadcast version, the unaired alternate version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was structurally different than its counterpart. A completely different opening narration presented by William Shatner focused in more detail on the Enterprise's mission (which would eventually be heard on television in a rare 1967 promotional spot). The pilot itself was structured with four acts and an epilogue, similar to what was utilized in Quinn Martin's series MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Most importantly, the alternate version of the pilot contained opening and closing themes never heard in any episode of STAR TREK (which would also be issued by GNP Crescendo Records as part of a soundtrack release of music from both pilot episodes), as well as footage in the first act focusing on additional character moments. None of these variations appeared in the broadcast version of the pilot in September 1966. It is believed that this alternate version of the pilot was screened by NBC executives as the basis for committing STAR TREK to series production status.
For the better part of four decades this version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" remained largely unseen by the public, until the advent of home video technology and the Internet. Videos on YouTube.com began to surface showcasing some of this lost footage, taken from poor quality video prints of the pilots.
All of this changed when a German film collector acquired a 35-millimeter print some years back and brought it to the attention of CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. The print itself was transferred to HD video by Magic Picture Home Entertainment Gmbh and was transported in September 2009 to the United States. Upon arrival, the digital restoration department at CBS Home Entertainment spent many hours color-correcting the video and cleaning the film, frame by frame, of all dirt to present the best possible picture quality deserving of a Blu-ray release.
With the upcoming release of the third season of STAR TREK on Blu-ray, the premiere release of the alternate pilot makes three versions of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" to be issued on home video (along with the original 1966 broadcast version and the 2006 remastered version). Those who have yet to see this unreleased alternate version will finally get a chance to see what STAR TREK could have been like had this version been shown on television.
The Blu-ray release of STAR TREK: The Original Series - Season Three will be available in stores December 15, 2009 from CBS/Paramount Home Entertainment for the MSRP of $118.99 (U.S.) and $136.99 (CAN).
