Rumor Mill : William Shatner in Talks to Appear in J.J. Abrams Star Trek XII Sequel ?

Features

By GustavoLeao / 00:56, 9 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Chronicles Network Science Fiction & Fantasy posted the following rumor this morning at their website :

It is probably one of the worst kept secrets in science fiction film history, but finally news is coming out from the JJ Abrams camp that Captain Kirk or how he is also known as, William Shatner, will be appearing in Star Trek 2.

The director has made it no secret that he wanted William Shatner on board with the next film, one thing that highlighted the interest of both parties was when Kirk picked up the award for Star Trek at the Scream 2009 awards.

There could never have been a bigger indication that things are rolling, in fact, it seems that JJ is planning to meet with Bill to discuss how things can progress.

Of course, there is one thing talking about it and another actually putting into practice, if the part is right then yes it could happen.

The original report can be found here.

Time Is the Fire in Which We Burn ... | Report this post to moderator

I have been of two minds about bringing the Shatner into these movies. I certainly didn't want him in the first one because I like the idea of having it just be Nimoy and giving Pine room to shine.

But you know, neither of these men is getting any younger as it is. We should take advantage of Nimoy and the Shat while we still can. Just as much as I long to see D. Kelley on the screen one more time as McCoy, I will wish for these fine actors to be onscreen again as Kirk and Spock.

This is outrageous. Everyone knows its not Star trek unless Yeoman Rand is in the movie! JJ Better have her on board.

This is depressing. He better not cave to this self righteous megalomaniac.

The central question that emerges . . . is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not prevail numerically? The sobering answer is Yes – the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. -- the eminent conservative rag, National Review

Data vs. Kirk | Report this post to moderator
By: Jodeo (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:36:55 on Nov 09, 2009

They couldn't bring back Kirk (granted, he was dead) for this first movie.

But for the Countdown comics they could bring back Data.

As for resurrecting Kirk? Q shows up at his grave site and just says, snidely (of course... ) "Get up." Dust combines into bones, and flesh, tissue, and skin begin to rematerialize into Kirk's body. Cool effect possibilities.

But that's all you need.

Or, leave him there, dead. I don't care. Shatner killed Kirk: He agreed to do the picture.

Some very good points have been made. The script is not even done yet, they have began work on it but a first draft is far from done. But I think that yes Shatner would sign on without knowing what his role is because A) after the success of the new movie of course he wants to be in the limelight and in the action again, popularity, which actor does not want that. B) He signed on to Generations knowing his character is killed! So yes after a meeting with JJ and no script ready Shatner would for sure sign on

And I also agree that I don't want the new script written around Shater as Kirk. The new movie was not written around Nimoy Spock but was well integrated. The new Star Trek can stand on its own and the next movie should not be any different. If Shatner is written in, it should be a treat not a load bearing pillar. The new movie was so beautifully written, designed, executed and presented it is a testament to the legacy of this franchise.

My only issue with including Shatner at this point... | Report this post to moderator

If he does indeed end up being in the next movie, and if the next movie makes "Dark Knight" kind of money regardless of him being in it, we'll end up having to repeatedly hear from a small segment of fanboys that it's somehow "proof" that they should have just included him in this most recent movie as well, until you just want to blow your brains out.

when I see the pictures of him standing ON SET. Until then, I don't care who the source is, it's just a rumor.

... in the new Timeline he might not be dead. It would involve a bit of time travel (again) but it could be done FAR more easily than in the first film, when they would have to explain an escape from the Nexus and so on. Here, they no longer have that baggage to contend with.

Star Trek XII Sequel? | Report this post to moderator
By: DixonHill (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:46:02 on Nov 09, 2009 | Edit History (2)

That would be Star Trek XIII then LOL

Seriously, I don't know what to make of that. How could that possibly work? I could imagine him either as Pine-Kirk's gradfather or as his future self / aged version in the new timeline ("The Deadly Years" without make-up)
But if they try anything to bring in a post-GEN Kirk from the old timeline, that would be the most ridiculous attempt imaginable...

Weren't we hearing not so long ago the script hadn't even been started? If the story is nowhere near finalized then there's no reason to think Shatner's appearance is anywhere close to being a done deal. I just point this out in the hopes we don't go through the same cycle of soaring hopes and expectations, followed by bitter disappointment and unfair accusations.
