J.J. Abrams Not Planning to Direct Mission Impossible 4, Talks Superman Franchise

Features

By GustavoLeao / 00:14, 27 October 2009 / General Genre/SciFi

MTV posted a new interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and here are excerpts.

"I'm producing with Tom [Cruise]," he said regarding Mission Impossible 4. "My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie."

"I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created," he explained. "It's not a reboot kind of thing."

Another movie franchise Abrams would like to return is Superman.

"No one has talked to me about it," Abrams told MTV News about the Superman movie franchise, for which he wrote a script several years ago. "Obviously I'm sure Warner Brothers has a plan for what they want to do."

"Writing that script was a long process," he explained. "It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don't know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."

On a version of his script being used for the franchise, it seems Abrams would welcome the idea.

"That version of the movie-the one that was reviewed and vilified-was actually not the latest draft we had at the time and we worked on it well after that. I do think there's a version of that movie that could be really fun to see," said Abrams. "You never really know. Everything happens for a reason."

The full interview with Abrams on M:I 4 and Superman can be found here and here.

Bring back Leonard Nimoy and Martin Landau - and maybe make them turn bad.

MI3 is the best one - but it was overshadowed by the Tom Cruise backlash. Great movie.

Having read the script review, JJ's version of Superman sounds like a mix between the classic origin story, and the Stan Lee reimagining (in which the main villain is a Kryptonian who looks a lot like Lex Luthor, Krypton still exists, and so on.. Given a chance, it may not have been such a bad movie though. Superman could've still found a destroyed Krypton in its sequel!

The problem with the MI franchise is that the first movie sucked, big time. Not Abrams' fault. I don't know who did the second movie other than that Moore and Braga co-wrote it, and that it wasn't any better.

Without seeing it, and knowing Abrams' reputation, I would guess that MI3 was the best of the 3, but only because the other 2 were terrible.

I would rather see Abrams do a complete reboot of the franchise, without Tom Cruise, and use Jim Phelps as the lead character.

The mere fact that Tom Cruise is involved is enough to make me not want to see it. Too sick of his pompousity.

Trip: Oh, God.

Reed: You ever noticed her bum?

Trip: What?

Reed: Her bum. She's got an awfully nice bum.

Trip: To Subcommander T'Pol. (toast)

Reed: Awfully nice.

Mission Impossible 3 was way underrated | Report this post to moderator

I just saw a bit of it on TV this weekend after not having seen it in a few years. Really entertaining and honestly, more watchable than the other two.

Too bad Tom Cruise fatigue sunk that movie, but it seems like it worked out for everyone in the end.

Not Superman | Report this post to moderator
By: StillKirok (Odo's file, contact) @ 04:34:03 on Oct 27, 2009

Maybe he's learned a thing or two, but based on his last experience with Superman, where he actually thought it was a good idea to turn Lex Luthor into a Kryptonian, he shouldn't have anything to do with the Superman franchise.

The only way that franchise will get back on track is if they have a real comic book writer write the story. Or have someone involved in the animated shows, which always seem to do better work than the live action stuff.

If Abrams directed and didn't write it, and had a writer with a talent and a clue, maybe. But after his last attempt at doing Superman, I would pass.
