Kate Mulgrew Talks About Her Admiral Janeway Cameo in Nemesis, Says She is Open to Star in a Voyager TV Movie

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:00, 3 September 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

The cancelled British Star Trek Monthly magazine features a somewhat olD interview with Star Trek Voyager star Kate Mulgrew, published just after the release of Star Trek Nemesis, and here are excerpts from the article.

Kate Mulgrew got the opportunity to play Janeway yet again when Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman asked her to shoot a cameo for [Star Trek: Nemesis]. The actress spent one day playing Admiral Janeway, as opposed to Captain Janeway.

KATE MULGREW: I was delighted to get that call. I was delighted to be giving Captain Picard [Patrick Stewart] his orders, as I had long wanted to do. Rick phoned me and said, 'I'd love you to come in and do this cameo for us. Can you do it?' I said yes. It was that simple. And it really wasn't a day on set. It was more like one hour, maybe two max. I was on a sound stage and Patrick Stewart was off-camera, and the scene was basically me telling him what to do. It was very fast. It was extremely organised. Rick Berman came down to the set and Patrick was, as always, very gracious. And that was it. I had to get on a plane in a matter of hours, so it was very fast and it was very satisfying. The shot itself was just me. It was just me on one little set. Captain Picard's not in the shot with Captain Janeway.

But did getting a promotion in rank change her approach to Janeway?

KATE MULGREW: It was interesting; the uniform I put on was Admiral Janeway's uniform, not Captain Janeway's. There is a difference. It's not just a uniform to me. You've got to understand, these kinds of specifics are very important to the actor. Certainly, I am no longer the captain on the Intrepid vessel that had been lost in space for so long. I am now the admiral - well and truly grounded and in a position of high command. So as the actress, even just for that hour or two I was there, I tried to take it to another level.

So what are the odds of Mulgrew putting on her uniform - be it Captain Janeway's or Admiral Janeway's - at some point in the future? It is not out of the realm of possibility that Janeway could turn up in a subsequent feature that includes charactrs from all the Star Trek incarnations. It is also not out of the realm of possibility that Paramount Pictures might one day reunite the [Star Trek: Voyager] cast for a television movie.

KATE MULGREW: I've said this before and I stand by it: it's all speculative that I would put on a uniform again. It was speculative before I put on a uniform for [Star Trek: Nemesis] and it's speculative again now. If, in fact, they would consider doing a [Star Trek Voyager] movie I would be very happy to talk to them about doing that. But as I say, it's all speculative at this point. I am open to it. I am certainly open to it

Why can't they make chep Trek films? | Report this post to moderator

I mean, I know that the market should not be saturated and all, but whay can't Paramount make a couple of cheap Trek movies? Like, a DS9 mini-series on Syfy or Spike or even CBS. Or, a quick USS Titan movie made for $30 million. I'm sure it would recoup that plus more with DVD sales. Heck, I'd even be happy with a straight to DVD movie based on Voyager made for like $20 million. I find that sometimes scifi movies produced on a limited budget tend to be a more intimate and engaging story. (Distrit 9, Moon, Cube, Star Trek II, etc.)

A very gracious woman and she's been missed. It'll be nice to see her on TV again this fall.

How come ST Monthly got canceled? Especially with the movie so popular...

"I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!'" - Gene Roddenberry

"...I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest, as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations..." - Gene Roddenberry

I like Voyager, but... | Report this post to moderator

...a Voyager movie would've made about $50m in the US. Paramount would've made it on the cheap though - but no huge mainstream success for Trek.

Don't forget she played Admiral Janeway in the attraction in Vegas. She was still in charge of the Intrepid vessel then. I wish that attraction was still open. I miss it.
