Karl Urban on McCoy and Kirk Friendship and His Admiration for DeForest Kelley

Features

By GustavoLeao / 20:22, 5 July 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

In his brief interview for SciFi Now magazine, which features interviews with all the Star Trek cast members. actor Karl Urban talked a little about how he perceives the role of Leonard McCoy. Here is an excerpt of the article.

"He is a character full of compassion and pain. He has an amazing personal prime directive to help and heal others, whether friend or foe. That's his calling in life. I see him as a staunch and avid supporter of Jim Kirk. Through the course of this film, we get to see their friendship develop from their initial meeting to their days in Starfleet, and we come to understand the bond of their friendship. To me that was often the most interesting dynamic in material I got to play, because there is a distinct difference between how McCoy feels about Kirk or, say, any given situation and how he reacts."

You can read more from Karl Urban as well as interviews with all the other key players in Star Trek, in the current issue of SciFi Now , which as it happens, is out now.

TrekMovie.com also posted a video interview with Urban and here is a excerpt.

Question : "How did you prepare for the role of Bones without having DeForest Kelley around to offer you quidance?"

Urban : "I have such a deep admiration for what Mr. Kelley did with the role upon to me. He came on to play the doctor and through just the chemistry between Deforest Kelley, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, you know, became sort of like the third-build character in the original series. So I have a huge amount of respect for what he and what he delivered"...

Urban's portrayal of McCoy... | Report this post to moderator

...is what really sold me on the movie. I basically went into this movie cold except for seeing the teaser and the first theatrical trailer, as well as a few photos, and that was it. Otherwise, I went into it cold - and that's saying a lot from a longtime ST fan.

While I had no doubt that Zachary Quinto nailed Spock, I had a few reservations about Chris Pine as Kirk. But for me the key to making the film work was in Karl Urban's portrayal of Bones - and he absolutely put all those fears to rest. He completely nailed Bones on every level. Granted, I hope that in the next film he gets more screen time with a good meaty part.

(There was a rumor a co-worker told me that one of the cut scenes had Karl Urban doing his version of the Ole Miss party song "Hotty Totty" - any confirmation on that one?)

In so much of the interviews, the makers kept referring to the Kirk/Spock dynamic, but it is really a trinity to form the command of the ship. The one problem I had with the movie was playing down McCoy almost to the level of Uhura.

Hopefully in the next movie they get a better balance. Also it wouldn't suck to see McCoy with his daughter.
