J.J. Abrams Says He Will Not Walk Away from Star Trek XII, Open to Anything

By GustavoLeao / 01:32, 27 June 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Collider.com posted a transcript of their video interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams conducted at this week Saturn Awards. Here are few excerpts.

Q: Everyone wants to know, what are the chances of you getting back in the director's chair?

Abrams: We just started talking about ideas... we've just begun this process so it's so early that it's insane to, you know - I have no idea; but I would say that it's that kind of feeling that as we're talking about stories you start to salivate, like ‘oh my God I can't wait to do that!' and so that feels good and my guess is that as we continue it will become clearer how we will plan out what will happen.  But it's been really fun - even the cursory discussions we've had so far

Q: You're the master of starting franchises...

Abrams: No I'm not!

Q: You started a lot of really great things - "Alias", "Fringe"... I've seen your track record where you start things and, kind of, move on, so I guess I'm a little nervous that "Star Trek" might not hold your attention.

Abrams: Well, all I can tell you is movies and TV shows, it's like, I could not feel luckier to get to do these things and on "Trek" in particular because I never really knew it... I won't be walking away from "Trek" in any way in the next film and if we're lucky enough to get that made and, you know, maybe do another one I think there is a sense of ownership... I love that world.  I love the characters and we were so lucky to get the cast we got so I just feel like - I feel too lucky to be a part of this thing to say goodbye to it.

Q:  I just interviewed Bob and Alex... they were talking about not having the typical movie villain but maybe having nature or...

Abrams: Oh! I see what you're saying.  Well, I'm open to anything.  We've had some really interesting discussions so far but, you know - you have to be open to everything to find the right thing so the answer is sure, I'm open to that.  I think in a story it's important to personify, somehow, what you're up against so it's a tricky one to figure out how to, like, fight evil wind! (evil look for emphasis).

As reported before, the video interview is here.

Wow. This is great news. The always politically deft, and usually coy Mr. Abrams is practically saying he'll direct. He must have found the Captain's Chair pretty darn comfortable after all. Thank God. We just got the ole' girl resuscitated. Please Mr. Abrams, don't let her die on the gurney! Take her to the dance and you'll have a faithful, ever-growing legion of admirers to sing your praises.

By hook or by crook your movie has expressed most of the essence of Trek so well that it defies understanding by this longtime fan. You and your team had the talent and resources to realize Trek on the big screen in a way that is enormously entertaining and reverent without being precious, or worse, saccharine. That's a rare gift not seen in Trek directors since at least Mr. Meyer. But you have more clout, and you have more visibility.

If, as the transcript of this interview suggests, you've decided to OWN this franchise. To invest in it professionally. To take it to heart and to understand, not only why it's so revered by its fans and at least one president, but that it deserves to be revered at large, then nothing but accolades await you.

I would like to see Star Trek XII tackle the City on the Edge of Forever story again, and this time according to Harlin Ellison's true telling of the tale. I heard Mr. Ellison was furious at the Trek people for bastardizing his story in the Original Series. Well, now with the new time line, and with audiences and censors more liberal, they can finally make the story Mr. Ellison wanted them to make.

Well, JJ, you are an intelligent man. Why do you have to come up with someone or something "evil" in the first place? Of course "evil wind" is hardly accessible, but nature is not about good vs. evil but about survival. That "supernova", that destroyed Future Romulus, wasn't "evil" and yet is caused great drama and consequences. V'Ger and the Whale Probe weren't evil, their perspectives on existance were just so different that they caused catastrophies that endangered humanity without even knowing about the nature of humanity.

You don't need another Khan clone to set up dramatic events. And IF you need another personified adversary, why not coming up with someone whose intents aren't straight-out villainous but someone who wants to create something good (an invention that could actually help mankind) and accidentally releases something threatening...
