Bruce Greenwood on His Hopes for Star Trek XII, Says the Intention is to Start Shooting the Sequel Next Summer

Features

By GustavoLeao / 20:01, 28 May 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Examiner.com posted the transcript of a Q&A session with Star Trek actor Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike) and here are excerpts.

I have to ask an obvious question. What do you know about plans for any sequels to the latest "Star Trek" movie?

They're bouncing around story ideas right now. I think, from what I gather, the intention is start shooting next summer.

What would you like to see happen in any of the sequels?

I think these guys are clever enough to do at least two more and have the final one do a really hard dovetail into the beginning of [the storylines] for the original ["Star Trek"] series. My expectations are very high for them. The only thing I'd like to see, from a personal standpoint, is the mentor relationship between Kirk and Pike to continue.

What can you say about how this "Star Trek" film has appealed to young people who haven't even seen the original "Star Trek" series?

Virtually all of my friends who have kids that are between 12 and 15 have seen the movie three times each. One of them was like, "I didn't know that ‘Beam me up' line was from ‘Star Trek'! I've been saying that since I was a kid!," says a 14-year-old. That's part of our vernacular that they use and some don't realize its origins. So it's thrilling for them. Even people who know nothing about ["Star Trek"] and go to the movie on its own merits are getting a little lesson of the cultural heritage that they've been making use of.

CRITICAL they include Pike | Report this post to moderator

I'm excited that Bruce Greenwood appears so invested in appearing in the next movie. They have GOT to include him. He strikes me as an integral figure counterpoised with the new young cast.

I know at the end of the movie they show Adm. Pike in a wheelchair. I wonder if that is a permanent condition from the scorpion thingy clawing at his brain stem or if it is just a temporary side effect?

Here's a story line idea - and it would factor in Pike... | Report this post to moderator

Starfleet has learned the Klingons have a Federation prisoner handed over to them by the Romulans. He's been incarcerated for... 25 years.

Adm. Pike joins the Enterprise crew to embark upon a bold rescue mission when negotiations with the Klingons break down. Kirk is frustrated at Pike because he's left in the dark about the details; only that Pike has to do this and Kirk needs to tend to the Enterprise.

In a bold move Pike and a team of red-shirts covertly infiltrate the Klingon prison to rescue the prisoner. The red shirts meet their normal fate but, now, the Klingons have a Starfleet Admiral trespassing, spying, and in custody - along with their other prisoner.

The Klingon's threaten war and promise to execute both prisoners on the same day, at the same time - in different locations (so as to thwart any rescue attempts). Kirk must choose which prisoner to save. The choice is made even harder when the Klingons show the mystery prisoner on-screen, a face Kirk remembers only from pictures in his home: It's his father.

But James T. Kirk doesn't believe in no-win situations...

Mr. Greenwood is a real asset to Trek. As our new young stars carry on in the flashes of the paperazzi--as they inevitably will--it'll be good to have Bruce Greenwood reflecting, in real life, the mentor figure he plays/will play in the Trek features.

I'm SO GLAD they didn't kill him off. The Trek universe seems buzzing with possibility again. How great would a scene between he and Patrick Stewart be?

He's been one of my favorite actors since Thirteen Days and I was thrilled when he was cast as Captain Pike.

It's interesting but I would not mind at all if the future Star Trek movies were about the voyages of Captain Pike's Enterprise. Nothing against Pine's Kirk, I just really enjoyed Greenwood-as-father-figure Captain and I hope he has a lot to do in the next one...

I've always liked Bruce Greenwood, going back to the movie "Double Jeopardy" with Ashley Judd.

While this film ended with Kirk and crew in their familiar positions aboard the Enterprise, I truly hope they have a decent role for Greenwood's Captain Pike in the next one as well.

Can't wait to see this crew's next go 'round. I definitely would love to see more of Pike. Greenwood really made the most of his screen time.
