Chris Pine on His New James T. Kirk, Praises Karl Urban as the New McCoy

Features

By GustavoLeao / 12:21, 24 February 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

CNN's Marquee Blog has a new interview with actor Chris Pine about his work on the upcoming Star Trek movie. Here are few excerpts from the CNN article.

"I think that with this Jim Kirk you'll get the flavor of the old," Pine said. "I tried to bring my own take to it and do justice to what Mr. [William] Shatner did before, but you get to see the full spectrum of Jim Kirk. There's the young, bold, brash, cocky [quality] and I think there's a maturity that happens within the arc of the character in the movie that's really fun that I think people will respond to."

Regarding the new McCoy, he said "Yeah, [Karl] Urban is, oh, he's fantastic. I think when people see what Karl did with the role they're going to be blown away," Pine said. "I mean, it was a shock when I found out that he was doing it, he's such a great-looking guy. He's such a leading man and to take on this classic character role ... he is like the doppleganger of DeForest Kelley. But he brings his own Karl sensibility to it so people will really enjoy it."

Maybe it's me, but I find the original incarnation of Kirk a lot more interesting. From what we saw of the pilot, Kirk was exactly the opposite of how he is being reimagined.

Kirk, according to Mitchell, was a walking stack of books, and an overly serious teacher. Kirk describes himself as having been "grim." Isn't it more interesting for a guy to be like that, and then to discard that seriousness to find true confidence?

But I guess an idea like that would have been canned in the first marketing meeting. The kids would never buy it.

Read this earlier on the CNN website. Glad to see McCoy and Urban get a mention.

McCoy's the man | Report this post to moderator

McCoy was always my favorite character in TOS and all of Trek. The character and DeForest melded to make a great performance. Regarding TOS, Scotty and Spock are a tie for second and Kirk is a very very very close third.

As I am eager to see how all the actors portray the characters, I think I am most eager to see how Spock and McCoy are portrayed by Quinto and Urban.
