More Info on Star Trek in Blu-Ray : TOS Movies and Trek Remastered Coming in May

Features

By GustavoLeao / 08:39, 23 January 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Digital Bits posted a major update on their Two Cents section this morning regarding the upcoming release of Star Trek on Blu-Ray. Here is an excerpt of their report :

As originally reported back in November on The Digital Bits, Star Trek I-VI will be released on Blu-ray in the U.S. in May in a 6-film "Kirk/Spock" box set, each with remastered picture and sound. This set will include Star Trek V here in the States, though other regions may offer different disc configurations/packaging options. Star Trek I, II and IV will each be the original theatrical versions. (If I'm not mistaken, this would mark the first time that The Voyage Home has EVER been available on home video in its theatrical version - even on VHS - and the first time that The Motion Picture has been available in its theatrical version since its initial VHS release. Note that we also expect the remaining Next Generation films to be released in a 4-film Blu-ray box set at a later date.) At least some new extras have been created for this release, including "famous fan" commentary tracks for each film, as well as a featurette offering select scenes from a Klingon performance of Hamlet by the Commedia Beauregard (filmed in St. Paul, Minnesota - see the group's original press release and this previous report at Trek Movie). It's unknown yet whether these will be BD-exclusive, or if there will be a simultaneous standard DVD release. What's more, we've learned that CBS will finally release Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One on Blu-ray on the same street date in May as the movies. The release is currently planned to include BOTH the original broadcast versions as well as the new Remastered versions of each episode.

The full report is here.

Better include those Director's editions, or no dice! | Report this post to moderator

At the very least, Robert Wise's Director's Edition of TMP deserves to be preserved for Blu-Ray. I have little doubt that few people would disagree with me on that front.

The Director's Editions of II and VI also should not be standard-def DVD one-offs, and frankly the Blu-Ray releases are an incentive for Paramount to put out feelers to Nimoy (not interested in the first round, IIRC), Shatner, Carson, Frakes and Baird to see if they have an interest in revisiting their films to give us more incentive to repurchase them. At the very least you know Frakes would want to readdress the tepid Picard/Anij love story in "Insurrection" and Shatner probably has a million things he wants to do to V.

Disappointing | Report this post to moderator

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the Director's Edition of ST:TMP, I have absolutely no desire to go back the flawed theatrical version on BluRay.

Likewise, the scenes reinserted into the special edition of ST II:TWOK really improved the film and made it a better experience than the original version.

As to the extras...PATHETIC!! Fan commentary? Klingon readings of Hamlet? What a bunch of garbage!

Thanks for yet another take the money and run job, Paramount, I'll be sticking with my standard def DVDs until you give me something worth buying.

Correction from Bill Hunt | Report this post to moderator

I just heard from Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits, and he meant to report that the original 110-minute theatrical cut of "Star Trek VI" has never been issued in any video release whatsoever.

Hopefully that ends up being true about TOS-R including BOTH versions on the blu-rays. Though I'm still dreading the thought of what the suggested retail is going to be.

You mean The Motion Picture won't have the little extre scenes of Vulcan, etc?!?!?! The Director's Cut was better.

I love that they're releasing an all-the-Kirk-and-Spock-movies box set in the same month that it'll be obsolete. :)
