Star Trek Online MMORPG Reveals 25th Century Starship, the NX-91001

Features

By GustavoLeao / 18:01, 25 December 2008 / Gaming

For Christmas, Cryptic Studios, the developers of the Star Trek Online MMORPG game have unveiled a type of Federation starship that will be seen a lot in the game: the NX-91001, descended from the Sovereign Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-E commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the 24th Century.

Here is this 25th Century starship info :

NX-91001

Exploration vessel; Commissioned: 2409

A starship designed to carry Federation influence throughout the Alpha Quadrant and beyond, the NX-91001 is one of the first multi-role starship designs since the Sovereign class was commissioned in the early 2370s. Able to function as a deep-space explorer with extensive sensors and laboratory facilities for scientific research, the NX-91001 also is outfitted as a heavy cruiser armed with some of the latest in Starfleet weapons technology for deployment in hostile areas.

The NX-91001 contains the best of the new technologies developed in the past 40 years. Bioneural circuitry mimics organic neurons, speeding data functions and improving computer performance. An advanced sensor pod can be operated from the bridge or manned directly for intense sweeps, and includes telemetric observation VISOR technology to allow a science officer to interface directly with data transmitted by a robotic exo-probe.

A holoemitter array system allows Emergency Medical and Emergency Command Holograms to operate throughout the ship when needed, and the ship is equipped with a Class 10 warp drive for normal operation and an advanced hyper impulse drive for sublight operation. The Class 10 warp drive is equipped with an advanced quantum sublimating theta-matrix compositor which recrystalizes the ship's dilithium into a much more stable form than earlier models. This allows the NX-91001 to go much longer distances at high warp velocities before needing to replace the crystals.

Defensive systems of this starship are based on significant advances in Federation technology. The starship features an ablative tetraburnium alloy hull, which allows it to withstand greater amounts of heat and pressure than any previous design, and regenerative shields on the NX-91001 can adapt to enemy weapons fire during a battle. The ship also carries a full suite of offensive weapons, including 16 Type XIV phaser arrays, eight torpedo launchers and several other weapons. Note: Because of the recent conflicts, the complete weapons configuration of the NX-91001 is classified.

I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this thing looks not only lazy, but ridiculously stupid..

I mean, they basically took the Enterprise E, threw on the "roll bar" from the Miranda and voila. "New" ship.

I read some of the story background on the website, I don't understand why they're taking so many liberties with the Trek universe as far as story goes, yet when it comes to new starship designs they avoid something equally as creative.

Not a lot of effort went into this. Looks like someone tried to mix some model kits...

Looks like a strech limo version of the 1701E | Report this post to moderator

You know when they take a Hummer, stretch it w-a-y out and then trick it up a bit for added Vegas-bling? This is what the NX91001 reminds me of, but with the 1701E (which along with the original NX01 is my fave) as the basis of the carriagework.

While there's plenty of technobabble about what's under the 91001's skin, from the outside there's nothing 'NX' (new experimental design) about this, unlike Archer's NX-01 or Sulu's NX-2000 (which I think later became the NCC-2000?).

But there's one thing the ship would be good for, and that is being a travelling "Starfleet Academy in space" – they could pack it to the gills with every possible stereotype of late teen and twentysomething, equip it with a gym, bar, bowling alley and spa/sauna, then christen it the NCC-90210 and Paramount's got themselves the next Star Trek TV franchise!

This doesn't look like the evolution of a design. It looks like a competing 1701-E model that got passed over for being to "busy." Or a Sovereign refit. There's no "NX" there, at least in the ship's form.

I'll grant that it's not (offensively) ugly -- my inner twelve year old thinks it's the coolest thing I've seen all day. But I was hoping that they would evolve the ship designs and take some artistic liberties.

And I wonder who on the design team lives in Altadena.

Always like to see new designs but... | Report this post to moderator

Interesting ship.I think for a ship based on the Sovereign design that is almost 40 years old (by the time the new ship is launched), it looks too much like it. Seems like the style did not change too much. Also, what is up with the pod/impulse engine between the nacelles?

And this is why we needed a reboot | Report this post to moderator

Okay, just read these technical specifications and tell me you're not up for a major headache. That's exactly the kind of stuff we could expect from any further spin-off series. And I'm glad we're not getting it any time soon. This sick technobabble is exactly the reason I want back Captain Kirk and Mr Spock aboard a sleak starship Enterprise...ready to explore space and fight Klingons hiding behind every other star!

"Hyper Impulse Drive"? "Ablative Tetraburnium Alloy Hull"? "telemetric observation VISOR technology to allow a science officer to interface directly with data transmitted by a robotic exo-probe"? "advanced quantum sublimating theta-matrix compositor"???

This MMORPG is best for the morgue...
