"I would be happy for Star Trek to come along decades later with a new group of minds. I'd love someone to say, 'Besides this one, Gene Roddenberry's was nothing!'" - Gene Roddenberry

I am sorry but just because his wife thinks it is a good movie doesn't mean anything. We have ALL heard people say movies that they are working on are going to be great and the end up being pretty bad.
So the proof will be in the pudding when this OC movie comes out next year. But please don't tell me it is great because Mrs.Nimoy thinks it is good. Her opinion doesn't mean anything. Do people really think that Nimoy is going to bash the movie? He is getting a huge paycheck for this. The biggest check he ever got to do Spock one last time. So of course he is not going to bite the hand that feeds him. So people need to get over this.
Nimoy has always been a class act. I can't wait for the movie to come out and trust his judgement as to the quality of it. Thanks for all the wonderful years Leonard! Live long and prosper. :)
--------
"Humor, it is a difficult concept..."
While i am happy to see Nimoy taking time out of his retirement to address us here - a rarity, i admit - let's not get carried away. After all, he even had nice things to say about Star Trek V. He has nothing to gain by being critical of this film now. Why would he be? Most sensible actors would not trash an upcoming film. In fact, many times, actors are contractually obligated to promote a film. For the opinions of Mr and Mrs Nimoy, let's wait a few years.
It is proper to thank him for his time but I think many are using this piece of PR to justify their belief that this movie will be good.
I appreciate Mr. Nimoy's comments. I hope he is right. I have been watching the original 6 movies of Star Trek with deep nostalgia this past week. Star Trek, even the first six movies had meaning and relavent to the world. I read about the ST6 script changes, and how contraversial the dialog was. They intended Uhura to say "You wouldn't want your daughter to marry one would you?" But she refused, so it was nixed from the script. That was such a racially inflamitory comment. But the writers wanted it in the movie as a commentary of our prejudice.
Those were the days when Star Trek had substance. The Next Generation movies and Enterprise were all about fluff and some entries had a pro-war message.
This new movie looks like it is geared toward teenages, someone called it Star Trek 90210. I hope this is not the case. Even if the cast is very young, it can still prove to be really entertaining.
Just remember Gary Mitchell's anidote about his first days at the academy, the cadets told him, "Watch out for Lieutenant Kirk, in his class its think or sink."
Gary also called Kirk "a stack of books with legs". Kirk wasn't aimless, he was ambitious.
I'm immensely pleased that Mr. Nimoy took the time to address TrekWeb, but I'm also embarrassed that he apparently saw some of the nonsense on here.

...is in the tasting.
The more I see of this film, the more there is to like.
I'm excited at the whole prospect.
However, as much as I respect Nimoy's instincts, I'll wait for the finished product.
BUT I also won't badmouth it without having seen it.
And I won't automatically like it on somebody's say-so, any more than I would vote for someone because a celebrity tells me I should.
A lot can happen between rough cut and release, so to me it's still the proverbial "pig in a poke" as all films are, prior to release.
If the trailers are an accurate indication, though they seldom are, we are looking at a true restart of Star Trek. Not the so-so "franchise" of Berman, but the exciting, wonder-inducing original legend.
If they can pull that off, I might stand in my seat and cheer.
With all the nonsense posted on here sometimes, it would not have been a shock for the website to be dismissed by Mr. Nimoy. That it is taken seriously enough to merit a message from him is in no small way due to your hard work, peacemaking and fair play. Hats off to you for this well-deserved recognition.
And a bow to an icon, Leonard Nimoy. Not since STTMP have I been so eager for a film. Ya hoo!
Thank you Mr. Nimoy for the personal message.
And congratulations to the moderators here at trekweb. You have produced a fine website I visit everyday. Mr.Nimoy's message may be addressed to the crowd critical of the movie, but it also shows that trekweb has become an important speaking forum for Star Trek fans....
Gratulacje!!!

Between Nimoy's comments and that of Kevin Smith of a similar nature, I don't think there will be any doubt that this will be a good film. It's one thing to be critical on a technical level, but I do agree that those who seem to actively want this movie to fail, or who think it will suck because XYZ is not the same as it was in TOS (I've been critical to a degree from a canon-concern standpoint too, but I've never equated it with the film being bad by any means).
I think it's going to be a very good film. The question is whether the mainstream public and the fanbase will embrace it. And we won't know that for another 6 months.

The one thing about Star Trek has been that it has taught me to be open minded to new ideas.
The only complaint I've had is for more trailers and previews of this new movie, but I can be patient and wait until May.
I'd like to thank Mr. Nimoy myself for taking the time to post here, that was very appreciated.
In the unlikely event of Mr. Nimoy actually seeing this comment, thank you, sir, for taking time out to address some of the fussiness that a certain segment of the users here continue to display.
I for one, can not wait for May, 2009 to get here to finally see what Mr. Abrams has in store for us. It should prove most interesting. :-)

Peck: My name is Peck.
Peter: Or you could accept the fact that this city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean biblical?
Ray: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor. Real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling.
Egon: Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes. Volcanoes.
Winston: The dead rising from the grave.
Peter: Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria.

I'm not surprised that Nimoy and/or Paramount chose to post here. Remember, for every one person that posts here there are probably a couple dozen that don't. TrekWeb is not a fly-by-night Trek web site either: Back in the late 1990's, Ron Moore would host question-and-answer sessions concerning DS9 here that were phenomenally entertaining.
If nothing else, Paramount and Abrams recognize the power of the internet, and Mr. Nimoy's post is another cog in the P.R. machine. Nothing wrong with that - I like being catered to!
As to the veracity of Mr. Nimoy's post: Besides that infamously funny "Bilbo Baggins" video he put out in the 70's, I've never seen him do any bad work. From "Golda", to "Vincent", even "Three Men and a Baby", he seems to care about his craft. My $10 movie ticket says he's right, and I'm looking forward to this new "Trek", especially since he's involved.

I can appreciate LN's comments. But it actually makes me wonder why they were needed in the first place. And why the praise in his comments. Is there a bit of a nervous attitude forming amongst the top execs involved with the movie?
See... I am not a hater. I am an analytical observer. I find the attitudes to the movie to be WRONG on both extremes of opinions. If you are against the movie, usually you hate but without any real reason. If you love it, you also have NO real reason to love it... no one has seen shit about the actual feature length movie yet.
But as I said, I find the need for these comments from LN suspect. I certainly hope I am wrong. It is so hard to keep an open mind on this movie knowing who wrote it.
Somebody buy that man a beer!
The fact that Leonard Nimoy was compelled enough to talk to the TrekWeb community directly regarding the rampant negativity doesn't put a certain segment of fans in a very appealing light. I admire his diplomacy; he is certainly a class act. If I was the one addressing the naysayers, I think I'd be much less forgiving. I just have too low a tolerance for uninformed yet deliberate narrow-mindedness.
hopefully he and his wife are correct.
Frankly I'm very surprised this was sent specifically to Trekweb, but they say the squeakiest wheel gets the grease.
As someone else stated, I'm a little embarassed that someone of significance has read some of the flaming comments around here regarding a film no one here has seen yet.
We don't have the influence of Trekmovie, so I feel like we're bees in a hive that someone has cracked open and looked in on.

"...to boldly fly where no man has gone in space..." -- Patrick Stewart, SNL
Come on. Where are you?
Where are you now that Leonard Nimoy, a man who has not only breathed life into an iconic Trek character, but breathed life and his creativity to the majority of the TOS film franchise. A man who has enough respect for Trek and his character to not take roles as Spock in material that was beneath either has praised Quinto.
Has praised the film.
Has signed off on what will probably his last outing ever as Spock with the sense that the film franchise is in good hands.
And has actually come HERE to do it.
Now what will you say? Come on. Tell the man he's wrong to his face. Tell him he has no clue what Trek is. Come on, tell the man.
Where are you all now?
PS--meant to post this new and not as a response to CH...though it still works both places. :)

I'm embarrassed to think that Nimoy actually reads some of the comments posted on here. Even for the nay-sayers, Nimoy's involvement is definitely a plus.
I always thought Spock, even more-so than Kirk, was the core of the franchise. And certainly, Leonard Nimoy is more of an artist than the Shat. I can't wait to see him don the ears one more time.

This is priceless. Nimoy himself addressing the whiners lol. I mean, he's the man, and he actually took the time to address the negativity and the doubts about the new movie being expressed here.
On the other hand, does it not tell you all something that Nimoy needed to address us here personally at all?

I know you wouldn't have done this film if it wasn't a quality script that had the important elements of Trek (from TOS) in the story. I am shocked sometimes at the pessimism diplayed by some TrekWeb users --- a *very* vocal minority --- toward a project that a discriminating actor/writer/director like yourself has endorsed. We all know that if it wasn't in the spirit of TREK, and if it didn't have a talented director at the helm, that you simply wouldn't do it.
To all the naysayers about this movie --- it's now time to WAIT until you see the film before you start saying negative things about it.
Thanks again Mr. Nimoy.

Many thanks to Leonard Nimoy. He doesn't need to tell us his WIFE is a tough critic....Nimoy's own decision to pass up Generations and to refuse appearances that don't advance the character give him a strong degree of credibility. I love that this movie was written around Nimoy specifically, which shows it wasn't merely stunt-casting....and I love that he still loves the fans and the character enough to come out of retirement. He is certainly a man whose presence and gravitas seem only to increase as he ages. Spock was always "wise," and how much easier is THAT to play at his current age and with the way his voice sounds these days.
Though I am a bit puzzled by some of the liberties that APPEAR to have been taken in Trek 11 that didn't need to be taken (chronology of Pike, Chekov being only a few years younger than Kirk, etc), these are relatively minor points and I'll get over it. Overall, the movie looks fun and generally in the spirit of the characters. I think anyone who goes on and on about how terrible this movie will be is just...an odd person. There's no way to tell this movie will be terrible based on the track record of those involved or anything revealed in the trailer. Some people just romanticize anything they saw in their youth to an unhealthy degree. If you think older versions of Trek are holy and can never be added to, stick with your old DVDs and enjoy them. That's you're right. To go on and on about how Abrams is the Antichrist, though, is just odd at this point. If people want to criticize the movie after its release, more power to them. There's a tiny chance I'll be ONE of them...but overall, the indications appear good.

Thank you, Mr. Nimoy, for taking the time to send your comments regarding the upcoming film.
As a lifetime viewer (well, I was 4 in '66 anyway), I have literally "grown up" with the franchise. While I have not always been pleased with what has been produced, I have always been a supporter of the genre of Star Trek.
With this new movie, some changes will commence. That is not altogether a bad thing. Your involvement in the franchise and specifically with this movie gives great hope that this will be both a respectful continuation and a vibrant beginning for a new era of what The Great Bird began so many years ago.
Thanks you, again, for caring enough to comment.
And who are we to argue?
Now they need to let Mr. Shatner take a look.
