IESB.net posted the first promotional image from the Star Trek Countdown comic book mini series from IDW, a tie-in for the new Star Trek movie featuring a story by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, written by Tim Jones and Mike Johnson, with art and cover by David Messina.

The image released shows a younger Nero, Ambassador Spock and two Next Generation characters - Captain Jean Luc Picard and Lt. Commander Data. Here is an excerpt from their article.

"There was a lot of back and forth about doing this project, how to do it, what it would be about, but what all parties agreed on was that we needed the right story and that it needed to matter. It had to count both on its own merits and when read in conjunction with the new movie," said series editor Andy Schmidt. "I couldn't be happier with the project and what it means to the overall Star Trek franchise!"

"Star Trek: Countdown lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie," said Roberto Orci. "It's our way of passing the baton from the Next Generation characters and their movies to the new film."

The original report can be found here.

I think this would have been way better a direct to DVD or short series, ala Gendy's Clone Wars.

I had a feeling this movie would have a tie-in to Next Gen, and I wouldn't be surprised if the ultimate unexpected element is JJ's take on Next Gen in the movie itself. I predict we will see a bit of that era, and I would be curious about how he'll treat it artistically (as opposed to Berman era).

Only sad possibility is if the original crew is now an alternative timeline, The Keeper on Talos 4 will then not be in this canon, and I'll have to change my Trekweb login!

No, it's definitely post-NEM. Nimoy's elder Spock is far older than in Unification. And Nero and his Narada ship are pretty close to Shinzon and the Scimitar...and they're connecting the TNG MOVIES to the new film, not the SERIES!

So is JJ saying that because Nero went back in time and destroyed the Kelvin, therebye killing George Kirk, whom did not die before, and now leaving his son to be raised by his abusive Uncle? Therefore Jim was not raised by his Dad and took a more rebulous path than before? Is he also saying that in this new timeline the Kelvin was Pike's ship and since it was destroyed Pike's life to a different path? He was not the Captain of the Enterprise for 11 years? and therefore no Talos 4? I will assume then that the result of the time change is Kirk does command the Enterprise only earlier then before and the team comes together sooner than before. This elimates the need for Gary Mitchell, Lee Kelso, Number 1 and we won't even mention his brother Sam......anybody concur?

Pre-Nemesis Prequel ? | Report this post to moderator

Since he is on a Starfleet uniform in the image above, I guess it is indeed Data and not B-4. And since it is a very young Nero and Data is alive, I guess Star Trek Countdown takes place BEFORE the events of Star Trek Nemesis. Well, just my two cents.

I'm not much into comic books though I like comic book adaptations. I would so much prefer this pivotal story as a direct-to-DVD feature film release in April, just before the movie comes out. Think of it: Spiner, Stewart, Nimoy and Eric Bana in the ultimate prequel-sequel...

Now there is that comic book...I'm definitely gonna buy it but I consider it a waste of potential, especially as it is so important for the entire franchise...
