Star Trek novels have never been considered canon (or with two n? think it's one... anyway) and if JJ's movie really is a reboot, I think it'd be a really good opportunity to make the new novels canon. The Star Wars novels are with the Expanded Universe and it's really cool to know you're not reading just someone's 'take' on the characters but their real story (yes, I know it does remain fiction :P). So if they could name someone in charge of the continuity, they could, just like Star Wars, create a tightly controlled official Expanded Universe with the new cast on the covers (ie. Quinto and Pine). Anyway, I do believe that, unless the story is specifically designed as a sequel of the new movie universe, the original crew will remain on covers (ie. Nimoy and Shatner).

New vs. Old Crew | Report this post to moderator

I'm betting, based on comments made by Marco Palmieri at TrekBBS, that aside from a direct novelization, the folks at Pocket Books will be staying away from JJ's take on things.

Still Nimoy... | Report this post to moderator

Interesting choice for the cover - it's Nimoy Spock rather than Quinto Spock. By June, the new film will be a month old, surprised they aren't altering the book covers to reflect the new crew, it's not as if the content of the books can specifically set themselves apart from the original series crew as opposed to the film crew.
