Rumor Mill : Patrick Stewart to Guest Star in Doctor Who ?

Features

By GustavoLeao / 06:39, 5 October 2008 / General Genre/SciFi

According to the british tabloid The Daily Star, Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart is expected to guest star in a Doctor Who episode next year - and could become a regular character.

BBC bosses have offered Stewart a role as a rival Time Lord called the Meddling Monk. This mysterious character was last seen in Doctor Who in the 1960s.

According to the site, an insider close to the Star Trek team said yesterday: "Patrick has been formally approached to star in Doctor Who and is very keen to do it."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The original report can be found here.

This is the Daily Star. It's a tabloid. Therefore everything it prints should be taken with a grain of salt. According to the tabloids, David Hasselhoff was supposed to make a Doctor Who movie back in 1992. Kylie Minogue was going to play an evil Cyberwoman in her guest spot. And the tabloids have announced David Tennant's departure as the Doctor about once every 16 days since he took the role!

The fact Stewart wants to do Doctor Who is a matter of record ever since he and Tennant were paired to do Hamlet. And those same tabloids had him playing Davros in the season finale, too.

He won't be doing a recurring role if he comes back. And it won't be another evil Time Lord because they've already done that. More likely it'll be a one-off role playing a new character. If it even happens.

It would be a terrific coup if they did that. But he won't be playing the Monk, that's for sure!

Quote:
The Meddling Monk, or simply the Monk, is a fictional character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. He was played by the British comic actor Peter Butterworth. He appeared in two stories (The Time Meddler and The Daleks' Master Plan, written and co-written respectively by Dennis Spooner) and was an adversary of the First Doctor.

Quote:
The Monk was the possessor of a stolen Mark IV TARDIS – superior to the Doctor's and with a fully functioning chameleon circuit – and said he left the Doctor's then-unnamed home planet some fifty years after the Doctor did -- which could indicate that he was a Time Lord, although it was never stated at the time since the concept of the Doctor's race had not yet been devised.

Quote:
Unlike the Doctor's other Time Lord adversaries, such as the Master, the Monk was presented as a comic figure: a fairly well-meaning but childish man who was not half as clever as he thought he was, and who never seemed to realise the seriousness of what he was doing.

This could be cool assuming its a reference to the classic Who episode "The Meddling Monk" with the original Doctor (William Hartnell)
http://www.tv.com/doctor-who/the-meddling-monk/episode/3602/summary.html?tag=ep_guide;ep_title;36

Though The Master was the quintessential time lord nemesis to The Doctor, there were others. After the whole Donna thing and the idea that maybe she was the person who picked up The Master's ring at the end of series 3 I watched that episode again (was decompressing from several weeks of continuous work related travel and was looking to unwind). I didn't see anything that indicated it could have been her. Also, I thought about it. The Donna melt down happened about a year after The Master's death following the year that never happened. So, for Donna to have picked up the ring she would have to have gone back in time to retrieve the ring. Plus, she wasn't with The Doctor so she should have no memory of that missing year including the knowledge of The Master and his actions. I think this could further integrate the classic Who universe with the re-launch and explore areas of the classic universe that were never really explored in detail. I heard that Patric Stewart wanted to appear in Who. I'd be glad to see this happen. Plus, if The Monk had his own TARDIS, maybe they could give it a console room more reminiscent of the classic days with non-descript blinking lights and so forth. Just a thought.

The Star and the Sun are rubbish rumor mongers of the worst kind. If they say it, it's not true, guaranteed.

You don't get Patrick Stewart to guest on Doctor Who and then have him play the Meddling Monk!

This would be like getting Harrison ford to be in the new Star Trek movie and then have him play the guy with the ears from "The Way To Eden."

Sheesh!
