LeVar Burton Criticizes Nemesis Director Stuart Baird and Praises J.J. Abrams

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:49, 12 September 2008 / Feature Films

The July/August 2008 issue of Star Trek Magazine features an exclusive interview with Star Trek The Next Generation actor LeVar Burton. Here is more excerpts from the article.

"This was a director who hadn't even seen Star Trek" Burton sighs, making reference to Star Trek Nemesis director Stuart Baird "Luckily I was pre-occupied at the time of shooting Nemesis. I was prepping Blizzard [a Christmas story about a reindeer] and as frustrating as making that movie was I had other fish to fry."

Regarding J.J. Abrams Star Trek prequel, he said "I went on line recently and saw the trailer because I was curious. It looked good. Now, the idea of a Starfleet Academy movie was kicking around even before they made The Next Generation, so that in itself isn't new, but J.J. Abrams is really a telented guy and I hope he puts his spin on it."

The full article can be found on the July/August issue of Star Trek Magazine.

I think the TNG actors have a legitimate complaint.

Genre films have gained so much more respect from studios in the last ten years in terms of earning potential, every director( with the help of the PR departments of course) is making it such a point to say what a geek they are or were, how much they love sci fi, comics or the TV show that spawned whoever, that no one would DREAM of hiring a director like Baird now. It would kill the movie in its crib.

And also, all the Trek films( except the first) struggled with budget issues because the studios had no respect for Trek as a property. I remember for Trek 6 Nimoy had to beg for 10k for more Klingon makeup. 10k? Old Harve Bennett digging through old Motion Picture sets to recycle stuff? Remember?

I recall the TNG actors took pay cuts for Nemesis. I think that would be hard for me to take seeing a 180 million dollar film made next.

i'm tired of the anti-baird whinig

maybe HE didn't know ST inside and out but all the actors did and so did the prodction staff

BUT He diod know what a MOVIE needed and that's why Nemesis feels different to many - it flows like a movie instead of a B&B lame production

I still say Nemesis is the best of the TNG movies

And add to this that Burton and the rest of the TNG crew complained bitterly about Abrams doing TOS.

I know we can all set our watches to some of you guys flying off the handle whenever ANY Star Trek actor has anything negative to say about a film or show they worked on -- but I would like you to produce any proof of a Next Generation actor "bitterly complaining" about Abrams' direction for this film. In fact, I have heard nothing but praise and optimistic curiosity, so I have no idea what you're talking about.

I get it. Bitter TNG actors. Paramount screwed up your movies.

Why weren't you complaining when you had the chance to make a difference?

Stuart Baird was never an A or B-list director. His 1998 U.S. Marshals was a lot like Nemesis, stale and dull and meandering. Why didn't the TNG actors complain THEN?

Fact it, the TNG crew never got the right treatment on the big screen.

They deserved much better than Insurrection and Nemesis.
