Just wondering what everyone thinks about the following: Would it have been less--um--"traumatic"--for some of the fans out there if they'd just left the old guard out of this film completely? I personally see nothing wrong with having Nimoy-as-Spock in the movie in the service of a solid story, and leaving Shatner out. I really don't see what all the fuss is about, least calling the producers "liars" etc. Pardon me, but I think it's like giving a cranky child half a cookie (i.e., "just" Nimoy) and expecting him or her to be happy. Maybe the best solution was simply not to let the kid have dessert. I think the analogy is apt, and that angry fans, and Shat himself should be grateful for what they have. Shatner's rich, and fans are getting a new movie. What's not to like?
Shatner, who I admire for what he's done with relative mediocrity (yes, yes, Denny Crane--is still a riff on Shat, albeit hilarious)pretty much signed out of the francise in 1994; he agreed to Kirk's death, right? They could bring him back as a past version of Kirk with makeup and all that, but what does that do storywise? To whine about continuity on one hand but shoehorn him in just because on the other makes no sense. If, by some Abrams magical veil of secrecy uncovered, Shatner's Kirk IS in the story, I personally hope it's in the service of something larger...and not just because spoiled kids can't have it any other way.
Just my two cents!
GASP!!!!
I just had a thought!! Pinto might actually be William Shatner.
Pinto is actually a breed of horse and we all know that William Shatner loves horses. Hell he might actually even breed the things!!!!
BWAAHAAHAAHAA
So Shatner IS in it.
They wouldn't work so hard to deny it otherwise.
Good to know.
;-)
Here's the deal. I am not going to lose my job by telling you what I do for the industry, but one of you surprised me with something you wrote. Pinto stands for something, that's all I'll say, I'm not using the name of a lousy car, that's for sure. Anyway "Normal Heights" will be very sucessful, I'm sure. As for the other one, like I said, remember these posts. It has really not much to do with Shatner as who has replaced him. It is creating behind the scenes talk & negative feedback, but as it's too late, they have to go with it & hope people buy it.

The producers ARE liars. They said they were desperately trying to get Shatner in the movie.
What if J.J. genuinely was trying to find a way to include him but like 95% of the rest of us, saw no way to do it without being a distraction from the REAL plot of the film? The problem is that the only "correct" decision in your eyes was to cast him -- and that "he never tried to find a role for the man". You are not objective whatsoever, you are seeing what you want to see! This is J.J.'s film and if he couldn't find a role for Shatner that doesn't make him a liar, it means he is smart and you are littered with too much false hope.
Quote:
And yes, this did cause a lot of negative buzz for the movie. You'd have to be a complete jackass not to see that.
To me the only "buzz" that matters is what the industry and general public see and care about. They could care less whether Shatner is in this film or not. This subject was only a lively debate/buzz to the nerd boards that we are on -- and even then only 5% of you are devistated that he wasn't brought back from the dead to be inserted into a film he doesn't belong in. The more you call J.J. and company liars, the more bitter you come across.
Quote:
Not contacting him about plot and never making any kind of offer is hardly the act of desperation.
The fact that J.J. saw as plain as day that William Shatner did not belong in this story is why he didn't get an offer. As a result, Shatner is now one of 1,267 actors in Hollywood who are not in this film and THAT is why he didn't see the script. Get it?

"My contacts are at many of the studios. I do alot of support work for them, and literally speak with hundreds if not a thousand people each year. Continue the bashing, but please write me an apology when I'm proven correct, that's all I ask."
Are you the same dope at AICN (called Hercules) who made this idiotic comment:- "By the way. All publicity about Shatner not playing Old Kirk in the movie is lie. Word to your mother."?
Who then went on to make this bold statement:- "I know a whole f_____ lot about this movie that you do not. Wake up, Trekkie!!!!"?

Are you really the same guy? Was just wondering.
WOW!! Did this guy get it wrong!!
My contacts are at many of the studios. I do alot of support work for them, and literally speak with hundreds if not a thousand people each year. Continue the bashing, but please write me an apology when I'm proven correct, that's all I ask.
I will be proven right. This thing is getting tons of negative buzz, and this will bomb mightily. It's not idiotic to say that a man, yes, even 77, who is the only one who has ever played the character, would make this pretty boy look bad. This is the guy from Princess Diaries 2, I might add. The truth hurts. I did not see Speed Racer, wouldn't waste my time, and many people I know, myself included, will not help this bomb along just to maybe break even, sandwiched between some pretty big film openings next year.
MOST IDIOTIC, UNEDUCATED THINGS SOMEONE CAN SAY:
(1) They never intended to have Shatner at all. They just led the fans on.
Led the fans on? Ninety percent of us have been telling you he is not in the film, Shatner has said he was not in the film, and J.J. very early on said that he was not in the film. It isn't our fault you were desperate enough to have THAT much false hope!
(2) They don't want anyone comparing Chris Pine to Shatner in the same film, because Pine will look totally awful.
Really, you have been to a screening of the film? You have seen Pine playing a young Kirk? You are honestly convinced that a 77-year old man would make him look awful? Insanity.
(3) This film has alot of negative buzz already, quite a bit for a movie this far in advance.
I am not going to even respond to that lunacy.. every actor on the project, Kevin Smith, the Easter bunny and the studio heads have all GUSHED with praise over this film. The only negative "buzz" has come from guys like you who have well-worn laminated head shots of Shatner in their sock drawers.
(4) This will be next year's Speed Racer, a big tank.
And I bet you were one of the 47 people who paid to see at in the theater.
(5) J.J. Abrams and the producers are all liars!
I believe Trexx said it earlier. If they had actually told you he would be cast, and then it turns out he wasn't? THAT would make them liars.. again, your pitiful false hope has led you to believe that J.J. and Company were personally out to pee in your Fruit Loops every morning.
Gustavo, you are right. Let us hope to Jesus, Allah and Oprah that this topic is closed for sure. We can't let the Shatnerbators embarrass themselves anymore!

Did anyone ever believe it was going to happen when they didn't write him in the script lol
Everything else after that was just damage control which was handled very poorly.
It will turn out that Shatner was the only person in the media who was ever honest about his non-appearance.
Still Kirok got lambasted months ago for calling the producers liars.
It turns out he was right. Liars!

Remember when there was a story about AICN saying "to a skeptical user" saying that Shatner is in the new movie? Well, that skeptical user was me and now this proves my hopes. Shatner is not in the movie, thank God.
