Director Kevin Smith Says New Star Trek Movie is Phenomenal

Features

By GustavoLeao / 23:26, 22 August 2008 / Feature Films

Director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) was on the Kevin and Bean show this morning and revealed that he was given an early screening of J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie, and here is an excerpt of the show, courtesy of TrekMovie.com

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

Host: Was it good?

Smith:
It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith:
The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn't need to be worried-about this film I cannot talk about...It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job-the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Kevin earned his 'Geek God' stripes. | Report this post to moderator

I'm just curious when Kevin Smith, a nobody from New Jersey, became a geek god? ... How did this happen?

Because he is a somebody, that's why. He was a geek from New Jersey who made this little film called Clerks in New Jersey and the rest is history. Today, he is one of the Hollywood "it boy" directors, much like Tarantino -- in fact they are both close friends.

If you make cult films that are raved by critics and geeks like us, then you become privvy to screenings such as this, therefore making him part of "the circle". So help me, once my film gets distributed I am so stalking J.J. so I can be one of his boys too, haha.

Smith is a notorious Star Wars fanatic -- watch any of his films and you will see references to the franchise all over the place. The fact that he has given this much praise to Star Trek and Chris Pine especially? Says a LOT.

So far it has been reported that he saw early screenings of "The Dark Knight", "The Watchmen", and now "Star Trek (XI)". How did this happen?

It's possible we'll be seeing a movie that a lot of people are going to like. It's a high states gamble for Paramount; it simply has to work for them, and I think it may do that, with a little bit of luck... But what I really hope for, is that the movie will attract the right people. Not the right amount of people. But the right people. People that are going to understand, appriciate and support some of the original ideas behind Star Trek. Not necessarely all of the ideas, but some of them. Because that's what makes Star Trek stand out in the sci-fi world. It contains a warmth that ironically go against what a lot of people consider cool entertainment.

Then thats a start. He had in the past been critical of the same Trek movies we have been critical on. While I know he is more of a superman (or just general superheroes) fan than a Trek fan, I know he has a fondness for it.

I don't know what this director is talking about, but it seems like a pretty decent movie!
