Stargate Atlantis is Cancelled, DVD Movies Coming in 2009

SyFy Portal has revealed that Sci Fi Channel and MGM have cancelled the hit sci-fi series Stargate Atlantis, starring former Voyager actor Robert Picardo.

MGM revealed that they intend to continue the Atlantis story in the form of  Direct-to-DVD movies, and the first movie will be written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, to be released on DVD in early 2009.

"We're excited to tell' Atlantis stories' on a bigger canvas," said Stargate producers and creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper in a statement. "The successes of the two original Stargate direct-to-video movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise."

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, senior vice president of programming and original movies at the SciFi Channel.

I'm not exaggerating... around noon or 1pm I just had a feeling that I should google "Stargate Atlantis Canceled" - lo and behold... canceled today.

Seriously, I had a feeling this was going to happen. They hit lucky #100 this year.

I really did do that google search at random today, though.

First it was the Lion's Den on NBC way back a few years ago and now Atlantis. Man that guy can suck the life our of a franchise like a motherf0er. Maybe he should stick to guest staring.

Actually, TV Movie | Report this post to moderator

According to the official announcement from Sci-Fi (link), the movie will actually air on Sci-Fi, making at least this one a TV movie. In fact, the SyFy Portal piece says the same thing. The references to Direct to DVD movies are secondary and speculative ("could join [SG-1} in the direct-to-DVD market", "if you go by 'SG-1's' example ...").

Ah, the entertaining sounds of an exec trying to use Hollywood doubletalk to make cancelling a show sound like a good thing. Hilarious.

Well, this is welcome news indeed. Now Sci-Fi channel has even more room for their top-rate programming. Now if they'd just cancel BSG and remove all the Star Trek they occasionally show, there'd be more room for other "hits" like, "Dino-Werewolf vs. Amazon Women 5".
