Clifton Collins on Romulan Make-Up and Working with Director J.J. Abrams

National Ledger posted a brief interview with actor Clifton Collins, who plays Romulan General Ayel in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie.

To become a Romulan villain, Collins says, "it took, on a good day, two and a half hours in makeup. On a bad day, four." But he's not complaining. "I love hiding in all my roles, whether it's an accent or physical mannerism ... that's the fun for me."

Regarding working with J.J. Abrams, Collins said. "He's an amazing human being, a great family man and a great artist. He loves to have fun, and we were working 18-hour days."

The original report is here.

The tidbits from Collins suggest a splinter group of Romulans, rather than some re-imaging of the species mainstream we've seen up till now.

A prominent facial tattoo on both Nero and Ayel could indicate a subculture or clan. This jibes with Collins' talk of "space pirates", which, like pirate brotherhoods of old Earth (and biker gangs today), prefer to operate aside of conventional society.

4 hours for a Romulan?? | Report this post to moderator

There was a time when all you needed to make someone Romulan was fake ears. In the TNG-era, that increased to ears, forehead peice and a wig. Looking at Bana in the poster, I don't see the forehead (thankfully). So if these guys are just pointy ears and a tattoo? What the hell takes 4 hours to apply??
