Star Trek Myriad Universes Infinity's Prism
Review by Jeff Ayers
Have you ever wondered what would have happened if you had made a different decision in your life? Would you be the same person? Modern science hypothesizes the probability of parallel universes and some of our favorite episodes of Star Trek examine these possibilities, creating another perspective into the characters we love. In Infinity's Prism, three authors let their imaginations run wild.
William Leisner takes Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise on a mission to Coalition Space in A Less Perfect Union. The passionate followers of Earth First destroyed the Golden Gate Bridge and with it, the dream of Captain Jonathan Archer to create a Federation of Planets. The new Starfleet leadership has a bold plan to join Earth with the Coalition and elects Christopher Pike and his crew to escort a very old Vulcan named T'Pol to a peace summit. Some of the crew don't want to ally with the Vulcans, including James Kirk. Having T'Pol on board brings back his painful memories of the death of his wife and son at the hands of the Vulcans. Leisner understands the entire world of the original series and utilizes it amazingly well to create a story that will make a fan boy need his inhaler.
Christopher L. Bennett explores an alternate outcome for Voyager in Places of Exile. Janeway contemplates allying with the Borg to defeat the threat of Species 8472 when the aliens from fluidic space savagely attack the ship and Voyager is crippled. The remaining survivors must put aside their dreams of reaching Earth and try to fit in among the Vostigye. Some of them remain destined to be outcasts while others will excel. Bennett creates another fascinating society making this a must for fans of Voyager.
Khan and his followers won the Eugenics Wars and almost four hundred years later, Princeps Julian Bashir makes a startling discovery in Seeds of Dissent. A sleeper ship from that era is found and several of the crew, including Captain Shaun Christopher, are curious about the Earth they left behind. Since they lived during Khan's reign, they know the truth but can Bashir accept everything he has grown up to believe is a lie? Clearly, the victors write history. James Swallow has written the best of the three stories in the collection and gets extra credit points for making Bashir and Ezri Dax actually interesting.
Overall collection 9.5 out of 10
Reviewer Jeff Ayers is the author of Voyages of Imagination: The Star Trek Fiction Companion trade paperback, and webmaster of VoyagesOfImagination.com
